In 10 years of traveling professionally, this is by far the worst hotel experience that I've ever had. The owner looks down on Hispanic. And the owner of this hotel created fake documents of land. I don't know the detail, but some Dominican people say he tries to steal the land next to his hotel

The owner is racist. His wife is a black Dominican woman. But she is also racist. If you are black, asian, and hispanic, it's not good idea to stay at this hotel. You will feel very very very bad..

What a beautiful Hostel! We were traveling around the Dom.Rep. and stayed in nice hotels but this place was my favorite. We only stayed one night but the pool area is such a great place to chill out, everything is so clean and the design is thoughtful and beautiful at once. The only thing - we stayed in a two bed dorm and it was quite dark. My friend who stayed there a couple of times said that the 8 bed dorm is much brighter and more beautiful. But nevertheless the dorm was fine and all the other features made it my favorite hostel in the DomRep! Thanks!

Chris the owner has it going on here! The place is a gem. Location is superb & in walking distance of nice restaurants and shops. The staff is incredible and made us feel so at home. I would 1000% recommend staying here. The rooms are cozy and the courtyard is perfect for throwing back a few frosty cervesas from their in house bar. Thank you Island Life!

Absolutely loved this place! It was my boyfriend and I’s first time to Santo Domingo and definitely won’t be our last! Great place for the price. Great place to make friends and meet new people:) Chris was very nice and super helpful with any questions we had. We got a private room, which was pretty quite considering the hostel was full. Great atmosphere and the staff were friendly and super fun!!! AlsoTHE DOGS. Gotta love Shoey and Hamilton. Wish we could have stayed longer! We’ll be back!! :)

P.S. if you want to explore the city as much as possible but don’t know where to start, I highly recommend their Zona Selfie Scavenger Hunt they’ve put together that’s at the front desk. Took 3-4 hours and we saw a TON. Bring it back to the hostel finished and you get to spin the drink wheel for a free bevy!

I absolutely love this place! I love the staff, the environment and atmosphere here at the Island Life Backpackers' Hostel. It is a beautiful, clean and super cozy place. I am a freelancer and can work from anywhere and I will be spending a couple of weeks here in Santo Domingo at this hostel and I am so happy I found this place. It's perfect. They have great wifi and great dinner and breakfast food, staff is friendly and very knowledgeable and can guide you with just about anything. The hostel is located in the historical Colonial area of Santo Domingo that is so pretty. If you are going to Dominican Republic and like the city life, don't miss out. The hostel offers both inexpensive dorm rooms and private rooms along with an amazing atmosphere, group activities and day excursions.

This is a really good hostel with a nice story behind it, a fair price policy and you can reach everything in the Zona Colonial by foot. Don't expect the pool to be large, however.

It's a really lovely and personable hostel. I found myself extending a couple of days longer than I thought I would because it's such a gem. The owner and the staff are all great (and most of the guests), but Aco and Egle made the experience really wonderful. These staff were the best friends I could've made. They were so much fun and helped me heaps when I was feeling down. I'm a very critical person by nature, but I have no complaints and would recommend the hostel to anyone.

A really great hostel right in the centre of the action. A very professional set up with great staff and a layout which makes it easy to socialise. The staff are excellent and the rooms are clean. I would highly recommend anyone going to Santo Domingo to stay here.

Perfect spot to center your stay in the Dominican Republic. The owner is very hands on and there always seem to be friendly fellow travelers around to offer advice or company. Free breakfast cheap dinner cheap drinks and a fun small pool are big perks. I haven't even left and I can't wait to come back.

Great staff, awesome location and spacious rooms. It's really well maintained and contains amenities (full bar / kitchen) that aren't at other hostels of this caliber. It also caters to whoever is there. Whether there were single people with friends, folks traveling with a GF / BF, or just travelers backpacking alone, I felt like everyone was comfortable and enjoyed staying there.

I can't understate the helpful and nice staff enough. I barely had any cash and had my debit card eaten by an ATM literally within the first couple of hours of being in the DR. What could have been a disastrous situation wound up being a manageable learning experience. As soon as it happened, the staff at the hostel gave me realistic and helpful advice on how to get it back. They also worked with me on a payment plan to where I could pay for 1-2 nights (even though I had a 3 night reservation) and still have some leftover cash for an excursion before getting my card back.

Also, the Great Dane that chills in the front room - awesome dog.

Worst experience ever, this place is a disgrace. For a start, you're not allowed to check-in without a passport, even if you are a Dominican resident or citizen. Second, they showed us the private double room and towels were dirty (promptly replaced by the lovely girl at the reception). Third, upon our return around 1am, we found out AC was not working. I had to call the security guy who had no clue, and again the reception girl had to wake up to fix the issue (she's great). Four, by 2am there were still people talking very loud in the common area, right below my room, and I had to ask them (twice) politely to find another place for their late night tales. If it wasn't enough, we were literally kicked out of the property for having two people coming to collect some gifts as "they don't allow guests". When I asked politely to the Dominican lady (who claims to be the owner), she said she was going to throw my bags on the street. In conclusion, it was a NIGHTMARE stay, the best part was to walk out of that door FOREVER.

Definitely one of the best hostels I have ever had the privilege of visiting. The owners are wonderful, the volunteer helpers are very helpful and sweet and hard-working (Thanks Ana! ;). Drinks and their new breakfast ( low-cost omelettes etc besides the free pancakes) are great.They have electrical outlets at each bunk and in the common seating areas. Amazing!!
