An incredibly beautiful, quaint hotel! We LOVED our stay! My husband and I have traveled to Santo Domingo for work since 2000 and have never stayed in a place as magnificent as Casa del XVI. Every little detail from, our wonderful private butler and staff, to the food, to the bedding, to the gorgeous decor( And we know. We are in the interior business), was truly exceptional! I look forward to our return! Thank you Casa del XVI!!!

Beyond amazing! Stunning historical houses with beautiful gardens, real colonial decor and the friendliest most helpful staff you could ever ask for. They asked for the time that we were going to arrive, so they could greet us with fresh juice made from a mango tree in their garden as well as to let us relax in a gorgeous room while they check us in.

We were given an iPhone with a number to our butler Cesar, who was absolutely fantastic. Friendly, helpful and an all around wonderful person, he took the time on our first day to give us a tour of the different houses the hotel owned, while telling us a little history, it was a tour most tourists would not get to see. They have some very rare artifacts and are continuing to renovate the other properties.

Normally a very expensive hotel, but on the off season we got an amazing deal through Expedia. If there is a good deal I cannot recommend this place enough as a good home base for visiting Santa Domingo, right in the colonial district, everything is just a short walk away.

My husband and I stayed at Casas del XVI based on its location and positive reviews. I'm so glad we did. First, the location is perfect for exploring Old Colonial Santo Domingo. You can walk to most of the historical sites and the immediate area around the hotel is very safe. There are some run-down houses in places, but there are tons of police everywhere to make sure everyone says safe. These aren't police with visible guns that make it seem like you're in a military zone. On the contrary, the police are very friendly and are there to ensure the tourism traffic flows well.

Second, the hotel actually has 4 different properties within a few blocks of each other and each property has only 4-8 rooms total. The building we stayed in was beautiful. The foyer was decorated with colorful tile floors and original painting and sculptures, and the two reading rooms adjacent to the foyer were filled with antique (or at least antique looking) furniture and more paintings. The cabinet stocked with cordials and liquors was a nice touch. There were a total of 4 guest rooms facing an enclosed courtyard with trees and flowers where we were served breakfast (and lunch and dinner if we wanted). Our room was clean and comfy, and full of natural light. I especially loved the porcelain claw foot tub in our bathroom. The bedroom was very tastefully decorated with a blend of traditional and modern touches. We loved having the flat-screen wall-mounted tv and the blue-tooth capable Bose speakers in our room.

Third, each building has its own private butler and chef. Our butler, Joshua, was extremely attentive. He made sure our made-to-order breakfast was always ready at the time we set the night before, made dinner reservations for us, and communicated with our maid, Stephanie (who was also wonderful), to ensure we had extra towels when needed. We were even given an iPhone when we arrived that was pre-programmed with Joshua's telephone number and the number of the building manager so we could call them whenever we needed anything, whether we were in our room or out exploring the city. Now that is service!

My only complaint is that the food could have been better. We met the chef, who seemed like a wonderful gentleman so my complaint isn't with him at all. The breakfast choices that were included in the price of our room were very tasty so we never went hungry at the start of our day. The fruit was especially fresh and flavorful. My issue is with the food you could order for lunch or dinner. For dinner one night, we decided to stay in and eat in the courtyard. I ordered the seasonal veggie plate as my meal and was served four slices of eggplant and a total of twelve slices of peppers (four slices of yellow pepper, four of green pepper, and four of red pepper) with a basil/pesto sauce on the side. My meal was $15 USD plus 28% tax. So, we paid about $19 for what was basically maybe $2 worth of food. Then, one night we had the hotel's version of chicken tenders/chicken fingers that turned out to be tiny strips of chicken that were breaded and fried served in a ramekin with a curry dipping sauce on the side. I'm not kidding when I say all of the chicken strips combined didn't even amount to 1/4 of a chicken breast - total! In the end, since we ate out for lunch and dinner most of the time, the food wasn't that much of a big deal especially since breakfast was outstanding.

All in all, we had an amazing time at Casas del XVI. All of the staff were very personable and accommodating. The level of service was top notch - from being greeted upon arrival with fresh juice and a face towel to freshen up to having a private butler on call - and our building and room were beautifully adorned. Definitely worth the price. We will be back.
