Beautiful sandbar where you can snorkel, feed fish, and (if you don't mind lying on the sand) sunbathe. Be careful of the current and rocks. The former can be a bit rough and the latter can be sharp. Bring sunscreen and snacks. Arrive at 8am to avoid crowds of tourists.

One of the most serene and beautiful place DR has for tourist. Well worth the money! Make sure you bring your water proof camera with you.

This place has among the best snorkelling in the DR. If you stay in one of the small hotels in Punta Rucia, you can leave at 7 am or 8 am, get to the island at 8ish, and have two hours of privacy before the arrival of literally hundreds of tourists on the buses from the big hotels in Puerto Plata. By 11 am this tiny sandbar of 600 square meters is wall to wall people, all shouting and gesticulating, feeding the fish inside of the reef with bread, congregated in great herds of sunburned flesh, drinking alcohol at 11 am and making a huge racket. Go outside the lagoon, where the reef drops off to 50 plus feet. Alongside the reef wall, there is an amazing variety of coral and fish. There is silence, ocean and peace. Inside the reef is essentially a discotheque.

YOU HAVE TO GET A PINA COLADA! I don't know what they do but it's the best I've ever had! The buffet food we had during our catamaran tour was amazing! The paella was very flavorful and was not skimpy on the seafood. Bathrooms were very clean and the beach was beautiful!

A must see if you are staying on the north coast of DR in the Puerto Plata area. My wife and I did the excursion from our resort and paid about $80 each. Included in that reasonable price was the air-conditioned bus ride out to Punta Rucia, the speedboat ride to the island, snorkeling gear, as many Cuba Libres as you could drink while on the island (!) and lots of fresh fruit, a speedboat stop back along the mangrove forests on the shoreline, return to the port, buffet lunch on the way back and a final stop at a cigar makers facility. The coral reef around Cayo Arena is beautiful and there were loads of tropical fish, sea urchins - all kinds of wonderful things to see. It does get a little crowded as the tours come in but there's plenty of space for everyone. The speedboat ride is bumpy but this would also be suitable for little kids. What a great day out at a very special place!!

This place is gorgeous and offers great snorkelling if you have a good guide.
The unfortunate part is that you will probably only get here as part of a 12 to 40 person tour and there might be one more tour here at the same time as you.
It spoils the experience of a private island.
If you can find someone to take you out privately and snorkel with you, heck yes! Do it right away!
