Great location for private Events
Nice for a rainy day to discover something else. Rather old and not necessary first choice in Hamburg.
Fascinating museum on the history of the city of Hamburg-- its rise, fall and rise again from the ashes. Veritable collection of ships and naval equipments from the medieval period. An entire gallery dedicated to Jews, their persecution and eventual integration
Brilliantly organised as you pass through the middle ages to modern times. Some incredibly detailed models of the city, buildings and ships. Fair entry price, very good way to pass 4 or 5 hours. The vast majority of exhibits have English translations.
Wonderful museum with great exhibitions displaying the long history of Hamburg. Could have spent hours more there. Only slightly lacking in 20th century - and particularly WWII - history, but earlier periods exquisitely covered. Model railway on 2nd floor probably mainly interesting to enthusiasts.
The permanent collection is quite interesting and well-curated, guiding visitors through the history of the city from its foundation to the present time, along more than 1000 years of development.
The only weakness of the exhibition lies in the quality and quantity of English translations, which are completely missing from some panels and object descriptions.
Managed to get in on a free day, and were very lucky to get a tour from a volunteer. Impressive displays, and fairly decent English translations on many for those of us whose German is a little rusty.
An old fashioned museum building, but it was very interesting. There were almost noone there at a Sunday afternoon. I especially liked all the makets. At the top floor there was a huge analogue modell railway system. They started it for the 4 of us.
Not my favourite museum in Hamburg, but quite decent nonetheless. It focuses on the mercantile history. When I was a kid, the highlight was the extensive miniature train set right under the roof, but these days you want to go to Miniatur Wunderland for that!
A great place to explore the development of Hamburg from a small settlement more than a 1000yrs ago into a modern metropolis. The model train demonstration further adds to the fun :)
If you're interest in getting to learn more about the history of Hamburg, then this museum is a must. Make sure you have at least two hours to go over all three floors of beautiful collections and exhibitions.

Great and fine grade 1 Model railroad
Very good museum with very complete and interesting information about Hamburg from its creation to the 20st century development. I recommend to visit it as soon as you arrive in Hamburg.
Great displays with information also in English and a terrific audio guide. Spent almost a whole day here, but only saw the second floor. Our goal was to learn more about the Hanseatic League, this we did plus much more.
We had lunch and afternoon tea in their atmospheric café: the food was tasty and staff helpful.
