We chose this restaurant because of feedback and we wanted to taste local and regional food, we had a table reserved for 20:00, we arrived at 19:36 and seated immediately, friendly and helpful staff, took drinks, starter and main course order.
Starter arrived quickly, good portions and lovely flavour, however the time between starter and main was very long due to staff dealing with a large group of tourists, the family seated next to ours became agitated, at the time we didn’t worry. The main course arrived, again good portions and very delicious, when we finished we sat for a long time watching the staff clearing tables until we managed to attract the attention of the waiter, we asked for more drinks and dessert menu, when the waiter said this was a our last drink order we asked what time they closed, he stated 21:00 the time was now 21:05!.
We decided not to order dessert as now it felt like we should leave, this was meant to be our last and special meal in Leipzig.
To make matters worse on booking, on the door and on menu they state no “No Credit cards” we had a debit card, the waiter informed us we couldn’t use it, when we asked why he said it was because it was a Visa So if you are planning on dining here take cash or a non VISA or credit card.response / report this review -

Nice enough place. Prices are fair, quality is pretty good but not outstanding. Atmosphere is nice, almost more like a large beer hall than a restaurant. Although the beer selection is not amazing. Definitely worth a visit. Obviously mainly a tourist experience.

Didn't realize this place had a literary-historical background; Goethes Faust touches on this setting. A couple of statues, above at street level, attest to this: "the Devil bewitches the students". That would explain the otherwise weird menu covers down below, showing something similar. Presumably Goethe tipped a stein or 2 here, back in his day.
The food and atmosphere (today) were perfectly good if not really bewitching.response / report this review -

Really nice place to sit and have a good and hearty meal. Great choices of local traditional food.

Had a very enjoyable dinner. Came a little later in the evening and was lucky to get a table even though it still looks quite busy. Waiting staff were very fast and attentive. Good solid German food and very satisfying.

A must for everybody in Lepzip -and this is not a cheap touristic place, moreover, this is a place where you can ENJOY the german cuisine and try typical cuisine of Leipzig.

If planning to go to Leipzig do not miss eating in the place where Faust met the Devil in Goethe's works. Book well ahead for supper (depending on season more than a week), can book lunch on a shorter notice for small groups.
Prices area bit high, but worth, if even just for the atmosphere. Beer is good, wine aswell. Food was also very good, a lot of german dishes and more. Would gladly recommed to splurge for a night and enjoy a historical setting.response / report this review -

Auerbachs Keller is a place of myth and legend; where Goethe's Doctor Faustus was first met by Mephisto. The atmospheric dining hall is spacious and grand, with colourful illustrations and wrought-iron decorations set tastefully in roof cavities. Having spoken of the decoration, it is done subtly enough that one could easily have a lovely evening dining here without knowing of the restaurant's fame. The staff are very pleasant and highly efficient. The prices also offer good cost performance - the daily special was a generous helping of pork loin with potato dumplings and red cabbage, with a half-litre (17 fl oz) of beer for approximately €16. A great place to dine for twenty minutes or an entire evening!
