Such amazing place. Very impressive castle. One of the most beautiful in the world. Feels like in medieval tale! Beautiful surrounding nature, small shops with souvenirs.

Beautiful place. The parking is all the way down the mountain, but there are many ways to get up. Great view all around the castle.
Not many tours in English and we waited more than an hour for the tour. Worth it, although trying to time your ascend to the castle might be better use of the time.

The tour has been minimized a bit, which is a shame. We could no longer step in to quite a few rooms and that was a disappointment. It is still worth a train trip out to walk up to the castle and experience the tour. I suggest traveling in Winter when the crowds are thin and you can experience snow on the walk up. It's magical!

Very beautiful castle, well maintained. But you will not see it all (probably). It is quite pricey to see it all and will take ~4-5 hours. To get inside, you have to choose between 3 guided tours (tower, royal apartments, and another one). All are between 8-15 EUR. However, after the one tour I felt that I had seen quite enough (I chose the apartments). There are great views around even if you don't buy the tours!

Camped nearby and visited the castle while studying in Czech Republic. Some great times. Amazingly preserved. Many castles were made into palaces with walls removed or windows put in. Most Czech castles have amazing armor collections.

I am a traveling bicyclist.
Hit that place fall 1999.
Karlstein is a small town, West of Praha, the capital city of the Czech republic.
We stopped by the castle.
Talking about our mountain bike tour:
The tour itself is just a day ride, but in a fairytale landscape. Not easy to find anymore in good old Europe.
So peaceful, so warm and nice.
In each little village an old restaurant to 're-fuel' ones body
With what? Czech beer, which is top in Europe.
Needless to say, we do it again!

The castle town is amazing so is the view of the castle from outside. But I would not spend the money to go inside again. It costs about $13, you are required to take a guided tour, of which there are 3, and the one that was available the day I went consisted of 5 rooms, and most of the things in those rooms were replicas, not originals. Furthermore, and I know this is a cultural thing, but if I've spent $13 on a ticket, and you try to charge me for the bathroom on TOP of that, I'm going to tell you where to stick it.

If you've never seen the inside of a European castle before, and this is your only opportunity, fine. But for my money, I'd sooner take the long trip up to Malbork in Poland and go to a castle where I get free reign to wander through basically the entire thing, it's filled with interesting historical pieces, and a thorough walkthrough would take 9 hours instead of a 50 minute tour that doesn't even show you 25% of the castle.

Short version: Visit the castle town have some lunch enjoy the view even go up and take pictures at the entrance but don't waste your money going inside.

The Karlstejn township is a very nice approach to the castle itself, with many souvenir shops, bars and restaurants. We had photo taken holding a large owl. We had a meal at one such restaurant and enjoyed the food and beer,
The castle is great to visit and the tour and explanation about the history very interesting. The views of surrounding area are nice as the castle is up high. Well worth a visit. Allow 4 hours to enjoy the township and tour of the castle.

It was beautiful sadly it was already closed when we got there and we could only see from the outside.
Warning: There're hours where you can go with the car (from 4pm I think), if you go visit sooner you have to park in front of a restaurant (where almost all spots are reserved) and go the rest by foot. We asked the owner if we could just park for a while and she was nice to us.

To see the inside of the castle you need to take a tour. There is just one type of tour if you buy a ticket at the castle and there can be a long queue in summer. The other tours can be booked in advance, which saves you some time. It's a nice castle just to look at from the outside and there are some lovely walks and small towns in the area.
