The holy monastery follows the same monastic rules as the monasteries of Agion Oros in Greece During the independence struggle of the island against the burden of the then british rule who exploited the island's wealth Machairas monastery played a key role against the oppressors. The monastery has expanded significantly during the last fifteen years and has become a magnet for Christian orthodox pilgrims from all over the world. A really old monastery, hidden inside the Machairas forest. If you go on a quiet day, the experience is otherworldy, the old stone walls, the trees, the serenity all work together to bring you in a introspective experience, even if you are not religious.
