First operated in 1888 as the Greek part of the Male School Estate founded by Tilemachos Kallonas, destined to provide excellent's quality Greek education. Greek ideas of education (paideia) encompass upbringing and cultural training in the widest sense, not merely schooling.The school's most notable alumnus and at the same time the greatest heroic freedom fighter could be no other than Evagoras Pallikarides. Inside the school, the classroom he was studying in, is dedicated to the young hero, featuring poems, as well as a farewell letter to his classmates when he left school in December 1955.Apart from Pallikarides, the school honoured all of its fallen pupils who fought a campaign for the end of British rule in Cyprus and for eventual union with Greece, with a marble statue of the struggling student. It stands prominently in the school's courtyard and depicts a daring student with his bag hanging over his shoulder, attacking a wild lion with a stone.
