Great place for seeing history of Sal and taking a marvelous dip and cleansing skin from scars/blemishes etc.. Taxis are available to take there but not back so hitching a ride from locals is possible or going with an organized group and tour guide. The bathrooms are could use some more toilet paper. Make sure to bring water down to swimming area for rinsing out salt from eyes after swimming to avoid burning sensation.

Great place! I recommend going there before 5 pm. This is when everyone is leaving :) Tickets cost 5 euros or 550 escudos. It's open till 5:45.

We went there at 5 pm and had all the caldera of the volcano for ourselves. Amazing place, worth your time. If you're travelling on a budget, here's how to get there for 5 euros. From Santa Maria take an aluager to Espargos for 1 euro. Get off at the roundabout just before the town. Walk 400m east to the hospital and from there take a taxi to Pedra Lume for 4 euros.

you wont experience anything like it anywhere! i couldnt believe it!
although the place isnt a beauty spot the feeling of drifting in the hot and so salty water was incredible!
and if you mnage to touch the ground you will be surprised how hot it is!

One of the best attractions on Cape Verde island of Sal is Pedra do Lume, which is an old volcano crater where they had a salt extraction plant. As you enter through a tunnel into the crater, you are presented with a lunar like landscape with salt extraction pools. It will cost you €5 to enter, and inside you can explore the old machinery from early 1800 used in the salt extraction process as well as look at the salt pools as well as taking a dip in them, not quite as the dead sea but not far from. There are toilets and showers which cost €1 to use. There is also a small Spa and a restaurant with nice views over the crater. As with most attractions on Sal you have to go off road to get there though this is one of the easier places to access. Turn off the road at the church just before the road ends and follow the dirt track up the hill to the secluded entrance.

A must see when you visit Sal, a salt"mine" in the crater of an old volcano. Bring your swimsuit because you can take a swim in the water. You will literally float on the water just like you would in the dead sea. But be careful with open wounds because it will hurt a lot. When you try to stand in the deeper part you will feel the water is becoming warmer, just give it a try!

Old salt production cite in a caldera. Now touristique place where you can float on the salty water. There is fresh water shower for 1€.

If you just go for a short visit whitout swimming in the salty water, 5 Euro for the Ticket is way too expensive - there is no much so see - after 15min you will be back at the parking..

beautiful place full of history, pity that, like everything else on the island, it is owned by a european and the consequence is that you need to pay extra 5euros to get inside even if you paid the tour already

We didn't go in - we decided what we wanted was to see it so drove round the rim or the crater in our little jeep at no cost and got some great views. Worth a visit. But seeing it close up didn't interest us.
