Porto Gouveia is a settlement in the southern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is situated on the south coast, 7 km northwest of Cidade Velha. It is part of the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago.The settlement was founded as Porto Gouveya. Not long after, the 1911 Orthography Reform made by Portugal which removed the y and became replaced with an i, which included the plateau and the settlement and became Porto Gouveia, it was not the spelling in Brazil until 1931, up to that time, most residents used the older form. The older form continued to be used for a few more decades notably in Cape Verdean Creole, even comparative. The today's form in Santiago Creole (also ALUPEK) is Portu Gubea or Portu Gubèa, more common than Portu Guvéa.SportsPorto Gouveia is included in the football club area of AD Ribeira Grande de Santiago, based in the municipal seat of Cidade Velha.
