Stayed here for a week back in Nov 2015.. Awesome hosts. Dad speaks some awesome Spanglish, but his sons speak better English than I.
It was a bit of walk from Old Havana, but the relative quiet and the fact that you're not pestered by peddlers or hustlers makes the walk more than worth while. I didn't book here with this intention, but what one of the high lights of this stay here was having a wee taste of what it is like to live life as a Cuban.
This was my second trip to Cuba. The first was back in 2004, where I stayed 2 weeks in Varadaro. Which was about a week too long at one place.
If I was to do Cuba a third time, I'd do 3-4 days in Habana and finish it with 3-4 day at a Resort. I'd also stay at Hostal Marques.response / report this review -

Good value + clean studio in the Vedado !
My girlfriend and I wanted to stay into a colonial hotel/casa particular in Old Havana. So we checked on a Cuban website for local hotels, I was able to reserve for 3 nights into a casa particular in Old Havana. Unfortunately, someone from this website, contacted me a day later, to say that casa particular was finally full and referred me to ‘’Casa Marques de Liz’’ instead in the Vedado neighborhood for the same price 40 CUC per night (cash only). The owner is in business since around 6 months. As a reference, Casa/Hostal Marques de Liz is located about 45 minutes / 1 hour walk from the Capitol via the Malecon street near the water & about 15/20 minutes walk from Hotel Nacional/Hotel Habana Libre. When we arrived, we recognized the flowers in front of the house, the owner showed us the studio on the top floor. We were surprised by the modern & clean studio on 2 floors. Once, you arrive into the studio, you have a sofa + kitchenette (micro-wave/fridge/utensils/…) on the first floor and on the second floor, you got 2 beds + bathroom + air conditioning + TV on the wall (local channels) + a safety box/safe. If you want breakfast in the morning, they charge 5 CUC for a delicious breakfast with expresso/juice/fruits/toasts per person, they come serve it into your kitchenette at the time you want. They come to clean the studio everyday. They offer mobile phone (free calls to US/Canada/…) for rent for 3 CUC per day. As well, the owner is offering a service of taxi with his old Volkswagen to go anywhere, we paid 5 CUC to go to the ViaAzul Bus Terminal. Ask him, if you want to buy rum or cigars, he knows a good local place. Only, bad thing is that they don’t have wifi, but it’s Cuba after all… In the neighborhood, you have few cafés/restaurants/bakeries/drugstores, for example, corner of calle 25 & Avenida de los Presidente, you can try ‘’Café Presidente’’ or a street below, you have ‘’G Café’’.
Our 3 nights were great, we were satisfied with Hostal Marques de Liz. We recommend it, if you are willing to walk a lot in Vedado and Old Havana.
