Yes the area is pretty rundown, I didn't feel safe, but there's an adjacent soda you can wait in. This is the bus terminal to Puerto Viejo. We made the mistake of going to the wrong terminal thinking PV bus was at caribe station. This MEPE station is the only way, save yourself a confusing trip, by walking across the street to MEPE.

    *RED ZONE*Bus Station Dangerous
    **Rip Off Taxi Drivers**
I was traveling from Sixaola to San Jose by bus. There was no AC/Heat, no restroom, it was an old bus, it was behind schedule after all the stops it made to pick up passengers at other bus station along the way.The driver stops after 3 and a half hours for restroom break. Some people are standing up on the bus for hours and sitting in the middle aisle because all the sets are taken.
My bus arrived at this bus station around 10:20 pm. This bus station sit in the ***RED ZONE*** its known as one of the worst areas in San Jose even in the day time. There are literally like 20 plus cabbies surrounding the bus "Need a taxi!" "Yo, taxi" "How much you want to pay?" "Come on". Dont take the taxi's there going to rip you off because of this red zone BS call a UBER. Had no cash so I walk about 30 yard away to request a Uber. Now I could still see the bus station in view. So I set down on my roller bag trying to find the address of my hotel next thing I hear is two pop, pops sounds like a 22 or 38( if you know guns) right at the end of the block were I'm standing. So now there's this lady walking towards me with a sense of urgency she stop me to say something but I don't speak spanish but haha Google translator. She tells me danger down the street and urges me to walk back to the bus station. It took a minute for the uber but they have a option even if you don't no where you are going you can request them to pick you up and figure all that other stuff out as you go. If I had any money that night I would have definitely given that lady whatever I had. An angel in disguise, thank you.
