After spending a week on the beach in Santa Teresa, the Montezuma waterfall was a super fun activity for the family!! A short hike (15 minutes?) from the road, there’s a nice swimming hole with several options for jumping in.. There was a good size crowd there every time we visited, but everyone was chill and friendly.. Keep an eye out for the locals jumping from the very top of the falls!!
From the beach this waterfall is just a quick hike to get there. You can either hop rocks in the river or walk along the uneven dirt path. Either way fairly easy. Once you get there there is a large pool to swim in and relax by and a strong beautiful waterfall. The path does go farther to take you to a higher pool but we didn't go that far.
A lovely walk from Montezuma village up to the waterfall with a small lake that you can swim in. The walk itself is mildly tricky, with some clambering over roots and some slippery rocks. Probably not a walk to try in sandals or flip flops, we walked up on a dry day after a night of heavy rain and it was a little slippy in some places. There are three waterfalls in total, the first is right at the start and is quite small. The second is much bigger and worth the walk, there is a third waterfall but you have to climb to get to it so we chose not to.
A fun short hike to beautiful waterfalls. The trail is a bit bumpy, so not everyone can make it. There are people that will help you get there, but be warned that they charge and are expensive. Definitely make an effort to get to the other waterfalls. It is not too much farther and is much less crowded.
Nice hike, definitely wear appropriate shoes, as it could get a bit slippery and there are many roots all over your path. Go on early morning, as it could get crowded. We were hiking around early noon and it gets really hot on this time of year.. So don't forget drinking water, some snacks and your bikinis, the swimming and jumping in waterfalls are refreshing and nice change to salty water activities around nicoya. Enjoy!
Best waterfall I have seen in person. It took us awhile to find it, but with the help of an extremely nice local guide, we were there enjoying it in no time! Amazing experience!
Nice hiking trail via canopies. I hiked with a toddler on my back and it worked out with minor dramatic events. Waterfall was beautiful but crowded with other tourists. Best to go early in morning as it gets really hot.
A short hike down to this waterfall is well worth it. Lots of tourists and locals hanging out enjoying some swimming, photo-ops and some cliff jumping for the brave.
A must see when you are in the area. Walk difficulty is medium. Beautiful scenery.
Take water with you.
Go slow.
Take river shoes. Your feet will probably get wet.
The first 130 meters is hardest.
It is about 500 meters to the falls.
There is some cliff jumping and you can walk behind the falls and jump through.
Great waterfall but water is murky; you can climb up on the side and jump from about 2-3 meters. The hike is a bit challenging, and I recommend sturdy shoes. At the beginning, there's a very friendly but somewhat a bit pushy guide who actually came in very handy for my girlfriend. I tipped him 3k colones after we made it, and he said usually he gets $20 tips. Maybe that was just his spiel to make me feel bad -- anyways ended up giving him another 3k. Definitely worth it.
A short (10-15 min), somewhat gnarly hike crossing smaller waterfalls, slippery rocks and trails full of tree roots, you will arrive in a gorgeous area with a humongous waterfall. Be sure that if you're doing any jumping into the water that you jump OUT to avoid the rocks below. You can also get behind the waterfall and jump through it if you'd like!
Be sure you bring comfortable, hopefully water geared shoes/sandals. You'll have a terrible time if you wear flip flops.
Beautiful place. You need to wear comfortable shoes and have no impairment on walking, sometimes you need to use your upper body strength but it is doable for almost everybody. Great views and lots of animals.
Totally worth the hike! If a local is "generous" enough to guide you, expect that person to expect payment at the end without prior warning.
A fun walk to the waterfall. Wear your swim suit for the reward when you get there. Don't wear flip flops, do wear water shoes or sandals that you don't mind getting wet. Avoid taking electronics unless you are very careful around the slippery rocks.
We only made it to the first waterfall. It was during the rainy season and the river was up. Crazy Carlos came along with us. We weren't sure that we wanted him along, but he did a great job getting us to the waterfall and back safely. We would not have made it to the waterfall without his help.
Free hike. Follow the path from the parking lot. For the first 20 mins you'll be walking by the riverbed until you reach the waterfall. Crowded with tourists, a few people swimming. The path to the top is very steep and challenging for beginners. You'll have to use ropes at certain points. There are two pools up there where you can hang out and relax.
This waterfall comes in stages. The first stage is an easy twenty minute walk though a trail. That's where most people stop because the second section requires some climbing. I think it's definitely worth it because you get to get away from the crowd and get an even better view of the second waterfall. If you had any trouble at all getting to the first waterfall, I recommend not trying to get to the second one.
Chilly water, nice views nice waterfall but not much water in dry season. Water is kinda dirty in the pool underneath since there are lots of people bathing there so it's full of oils and other creamsnice short hike to get there. Should be amazing in wet season when there is actually water flowing and the river is there :)
Easy trek up to the first waterfall. Then it gets a bit steeper, but don't miss the upper falls which are even better since you also have a gorgeous view and an opportunity to spot some monkeys and, if you're a thrill seeker, jump down one of the upper falls (not the biggest one!) which is about 12m high.. Quite an adrenaline rush, but be careful and you're at your own risk! :)
Had one of the best most rejuvenating swims here. The water get to be 35 feet deep and some locals were jumping all the way from the top of the waterfall into it!!!!! It was an easy 10 minute trek across stones to get there. Parked in the parking lot right there and paid the guy in the hammock 1000 Colones (about $2) for the privilege. I could have parked down the road for free and walked in but it was nice knowing some one was watching my car.
