Our guide's parents were part of an American group of Quakers that moved to Costa Rica in the 1950s and began a conservation of the rain forest program. We saw tarantulas lightening beetles fireflies and the venomous green tree snake.
I can't compare Santa Elena to Monteverde. We chose Santa Elena to be away from huge crowds of Monteverde. We paid our fee and hired a good guide on the spot. We saw: tralantulas, wild pigs and beautiful flowers and plants. No Quetzal sightings, but we did heard one. Many other birds were found. We took a taxi in and shuttle (leaves a closing time) back to our the main city street (3$ a person). The hiking is not at all challenging. The scenery was nice, but not amazing on a sunny day.
Good people. Great work with locals. Good feeling of eco-stewardship.
Less crowded than Monteverde. My friend and I enjoyed our hike through the reserve. Make sure to take good hiking shoes/ boots because the trail is muddy.
Went for 7:30am guided walk with a group of 8 tourists. We saw hummingbirds, black guan, tarantula. The forest is beautiful. The trails were not crowded, except around the lookout tower. After the guided walk, we explored one of the other trails on our own. The guide was good at spotting birds and very knowledgeable, but the level of explanation was sometimes a little basic for natural history enthusiasts like us.
Great park, good hicking.. the trails were easy to do and you must climb to the top of the tower in youth challenge trail.
Great guided hike reserve was amazing. Do not eat from kitchen made my gf very sick
Clearly marked trails, friendly staff and can do guided or on your own.
If you have gum/ Wellingtons boots will serve you better, though normal trainers are fine too.
We spent a long time trying to decide between Monteverde and Santa Elena cloud forest. We eventually chose this as it was less touristy and so we had a higher chance of seeing animals. There are no hanging bridges in this park but the paths are much more natural and you feel submerged in nature. We saw very few other people and 2 sloths within our first 15 minutes being in the park. As it is slightly lower than Monteverde it was slightly warmer which I really appreciated!
Beautiful experience with or without a guide. The guides will be abke to point out more animals in the distant trees but it is equally a lovely experience to just be one with the nature around you. Dress for muddy terrain
Nice cloud forest; haven‘t seen many animals though
We found this place online due to hearing people say montiverde National Park was overcrowded and expensive. We took the biggest trail and by surprise it was really in the jungle! The path was super narrow and not super maintained (being a +) in our book! It was super muddy but hey it rains here everyday, wear rubber boots or rent ones they have!!! Only took off one star due to not seeing a single animal besides one type of fowl. The office attendant swore up and down we would but we kept our eyes pealed.
The caño negro trail was absolutely awesome!! My father and I both think, that this was exactly the experience we wanted, when we said lets get a jungle adventure.
We were there when it was raining pretty heavily and it was awesome! Nearly no people (we saw three other persons while walking for four hours).
Also the caño negro trail wasn't a trail like others, it was a very small naturepath (about 20cm up to 60cm) with mud, sticks, and everything.
It was simply awesome!!
Great experience of wildlife. You can see the vulcan arenal in the distance and fast amounts of flora
Nice Place! Several routes you can go with oder w/o guide to see the very unique cloud-forest. Price is fair and neary nobody was there in the low season (just met one couble in the park). Ways are good for normal shoes and there ist a observation-tower. There is also a cafeteria at the entrance. The approach to the park by car ist not easy (would recommend 4WD and some time). But I read they pick you up at Monteverde for a low price.
Beautiful place! Haven't seen a lot of animals (only a few birds), but the vegetation is amazing! So relaxing and peaceful. Entry fee $7 for students.
Amazing place, the forest is beautiful and you will see lots of birds and even some snakes if you are lucky! The thick fog comes and go making this place feel unreal!
Good place for a quick hike (afternoon and morning). I was able to see some monkeys, "exotic" birds and some insects.
Very relaxing stroll through a forest. The ground was paved, or had gravel on it. I saw a big bug that sounded like a drone, and a large black bird. If you're a student the fee is only $7 so definitely worth the price.
Booked a guided tour on a rainy morning. Worth every penny, we would have seen almost nothing on our own. Guide was amazing at teaching about everything in the cloud forest, showed us a tarantula, many birds we would have missed and a baby nest of colibris. He even knew hot to replica many bird calls and attracted some for bird watchers in the group to capture.
Nice trails, easy but fun and not a lot of people!
Beautifull cloud forest with well made trails of various lengths. There are is also a child friendly trail, not too long but still gives you a great impression of a cloud forest.
Great people. Guides are extremely knowledgeable and are part of a great program
