This place was amazing! One of the best vacations I have ever had. Bill and Catharina are wonderful and very personable hosts, and the staff are like family.

The most perfect place to have a retreat especially if it involves nature, yoga or writing! This rustic Costa Rican Paradise was truly a home away from home. The family and their staff, which will eventually be your family, take care of your every need. The food is quite Divine! Not to mention how natural and locally sourced the delicious cuisines are at La Carolina Lodge. There’s so much to do from bird watching, hiking, fishing, horseback riding or enjoying a night by the wood burning hot tub by the river! Obviously you can see I can go on and on about how amazing this place is!!!! Also I recommend this place for couples, singles, families, groups anyone that’s wants an amazing one of a kind experience

We had the most INCREDIBLE time staying at La Carolina Lodge! We stayed two nights and were kicking ourselves for not staying longer. Bill and Karien Harwell, as well as John, Alejandro, and the entire staff at Carolina, truly made us feel at home! I'm not sure if it was the daily fresh milk in my coffee, or the morning Toucan banana feast, the candlelit walkways in the evening, the wood-fired hot tub prepared daily in our cabin, the DELICIOUS food, or the boxer named Rocky but to me, Carolina felt like home and I can't wait to return PURA VIDA!!

I have never been to such a beautiful, majikal and serene spot in my life - I can't imagine ever finding anything even close. The rooms will blow your mind. The food is indescribable - honestly the best and freshest I've ever had. They even have a private lake to fish. This is a MUST GO!

This is a wonderfully simple Lodge in a beautiful location. We stayed in the large cabin that could accommodate two families. There is more space and more beds than described in the lodge's website. The cabin is comfortable, but very spartan, which suited us just fine. There is hot and cold water in bathrooms (multiple!) with hand crafted stone showers. Plus, this cabin is one of 2 that has its own hot tub run on wood.
There's also a wood burning hot tub down by the river. It's great to swim in the swift moving, slightly cool white water of the river, then hop in the tub.
The staff is wonderful. The food is awesome. Dining by candle light on the very large porch above the river is idyllic.
This is a great place. Not for those seeking fancy luxury! but a jewel for those who seek a rustic but comfortable Tico Lodge.

La Carolina is the ideal place to stay in the rain forest of Costa Rica and practice / learn Spanish.

One of the coolest lodges. Staff prepares excellent food. Location in the rain forrest with simple but convenient huts.
The 6 km from the national road #6 to the lodge are very bumpy.
Note: Google Map shows the lodge in Bijagua, which is wrong. Actually you have to leave #6 about 6 km north of Bijagua and turn right for another 6 km.

This is an amazing place that if you go, you will never forget. Costa Rica in the raw with hiking, horseback riding, yoga, etc. Just be aware the pricing is per person and if you have a family of 5 like us, you may want to reconsider as hikes and horseback riding are now on top of your daily charge. At 80-100 dollars per person, it can get pretty expensive per day. I wish they would re-evaluate their pricing such as a per night expense rather than per person.
