The drive up is rough and the trail started off good but was overgrown near the end. Wear long pants and boots. Good for birding. There was a washroom but it closes at about 4pm as the park closed. There are no other services near by so bring what you need.

For birders it is a good place for looking for highlands species. It is not that far from San Jose area and the access is in good shape.

One of the hardest hikes i ever went on. Its a very high altitude. It takes awhile for your breathing to adjust. Went hiking in the rainforest. There werent real walk ways/ paths. My guide made up his own paths. He asked me if i wanted to walk along the cliff and go see the waterfall. I said yes. I fell twice in the mudd on the way there and walked across a big stream. Although it was a very difficult walk i enjoyed it so much and i would definitely do it again. The drive to juan castro blanco was very bumpy and my ears popped while driving up the side of the mountain. On the way back cows blocked the road which made me laugh. There arent too many tourists in the area. Mainly intense hikers and adventurers

The park is beautiful, and so quiet. We saw 3 other people on our hike to the caldera, as well as a ton of wildlife and beautiful plants. It's off the beaten path but definitely worth a stop!
