Total scam. Not real Hertz, and don’t trust positive reviews. Read the reviews don’t make the same mistake I and others did! They charge double, keep copy of your CC, and make you buy CDW, which is NOT required!!

Be aware they try to add deposit 1200 to 2000 us on top of rental charge.. I rent from HERTZ quite a bit and I was shocked. Normally it is a few hundred..

Total scam. They quote in dollars and charge in colones, which ends up being more. Read reviews stay away. Our two stars so people actually read this review!

Be aware that this is Hertz by name. Completely owned and operated in Costa Rica. You have to put a large deposit down and get liability insurance. Expect the cost to be more than double what you are being quoted online. Even if you have coverage with Amex.

There is a 1200 deposit required at pick up. Big surprise at the last minute.

Really good experience with the responsible of the agency. We made a deal for a long term contract and we are very happy to beneficiate advantages of renting.
If you want to buy a car in COSTA RICA for a few month it’s worth than buying a home with all the fees regarding lawyer, insurance, etc
Rent a car for a few month is really expensive but we sleep well if we have any problem.
Thanks to Hertz for this security and the kindness of employees. We even received 2 packs of Costa Rician coffee!

Whatever price you received online is a lie. You'll end up paying hundreds more. And getting insurance is largely worthless, since any accident you'll get into gets handled 'informally' since the Transport police never show.

I don't know if this is true for other rental car agencies or just Hertz, but the whole deal just reeks of misleading statements and scams.

I am a little concerned they used a terminal to authorize my credit card and then wanted me to sign two paper imprint slips without any charges. Definately not secure and pci compliant. Grabbed a very nice Uber.

Always seems to cost twice as much as advertised (mandatory insurance evidently,) but they have done good work all three times I've used them.

This place is a scam. They give you a very competitive rate online but when you are in the store the price is double of what the online rate was. It's very dishonest because they can give you an "all-in" instead of half of what the actual cost will be. They prey on tourists who have big plans to travel around in the country and make them feel helpless by the daunting thought of going to another company.

We took an Uber back to the hotel and went with Tricolor instead who gave us a better rate including the insurance.

You would think by choosing the big name company that they would be transparent. This is a disgrace to Hertz as I rented with no issues with them in the US.

these guys open at 5am, so if you have an early (or late) flight they force you to pay an extra $55 USD. They absolutely dont allow you to drop off the car even 1 minute before 5, though the office is fully staffed with people sitting around. Really disappointed by this dishonest behavior after a great trip in Costa Rica.

Its a Hertz so basically they rent cars. Staff are pleasant and the internet connection for credit card info is not great. Otherwise its fine. Small, easy to find with GPS the manager has basic English skills

Be prepared: if you want to avoid being stuck with a huge insurance bill, make sure you have documentation of your insurance. No matter what you do you will have to pay for their liability insurance in Costa Rica--it's the law. (Even though they charge a 500 per cent mark-up on what they pay the national government insurance company). Even if you have, as In our case, American Assurance insurance as part of our AMEX card, the Hertz agent flatly denied they accepted anything accept their insurance. My husband argued for more than an hour before they finally agreed to accept the AMEX insurance IF we put up $5,000 on our credit card. By this time, we were frantic to leave knowing we would be arriving at our mountaintop cottage in the dark on unmarked roads. So we forked over the $375 for what she said was liability insurance (The car rental was supposedly $225). In our hurry to leave, my husband did not notice that the liability was, in fact only about $125; she had tacked on another $250 in additional insurance. When he contacted Hertz, the next day (after a terrifying drive in the dark up the mountain near Jaco), the "Customer Care" Hertz agent basically said: tough luck. We have met five other couples in our visits here; all but one described similar rip-offs--driven by the fact that the insurance they add has a profit level of 400 per cent and the agents receive a significant commission on each policy they sell. The best thing you can do is insist on a written (or emailed) agreement to accept your insurance and a description of the chages you will have to make.

Unbelievable. Very dishonest. It's a ripoff. I booked a car for a week for $154 and adding additional insurance it would have been $260 for the week. They told me if you want to have full coverage for the week it is close to $600 and sold me that.

Later I learned that Hertz didn't have the full coverage insurance in Costa Rica, meaning even if you were to have paid for coverage and had an accident even though they verbally tell you that you pay $0 for the accident they charge you an arm and a leg for the charges they make up to recuperate their money for their loss. At first I thought it is the same with all of the rental companies in Costa Rica, but it turns out that Hertz is notarios for over charing and under delivering. Long story short, I have been a Gold member with Hertz for over 20 years and have rented a car in different countries and has never had such an awful experience. If I ever go back to Costa Rica I will not use Hertz never ever again. They are the worst rental car company in Costa Rica.
Gold member means nothing to them had to wait 45 minutes to get to be attend to, 15 minutes to get to their location and 2 hours to wait to get a car plus the awful treatment you receive. My advice is to rent a car from any other company but Hertz. Needless to say I have always received first class service in USA with Hertz and was extremely happy with their services.
