We have been to a couple coffee tours but this one is the real deal on a actual coffee plantation, many of the other tours in the touristy areas just have some demo plants out back. This one is a few hours very well spent. You go around in a larger group but they take their time so everyone can see and understand what they are showing. They encourage your questions and have knowledgeable answers. We went with our 11 year old and she enjoyed it. It ran us 30usd, about double the tours by the ocean but really 4 or 5 times the value.
This is a family owned business since many many years, and they know what they are doing. The tour was very informative and was not rushed at all.. They do only two tours a day, and so there is plenty of time.. they are not rushing to start the next tour.,.. tour ends with coffee and lemonade in a big family room So there is a nice family touch. Would recommend this to anyone anytime.
Great tour, but you can just taste the coffee in the gift shop. The tour let's you tastes cacao fruit, sugar cane, and caramel. The coffee wasn't my favorite but the tour was very pleasant.
I only can recommend this nice tour to anyone who is interested in coffee, cacao, sugar and general farming traditions. Our guide Diego was hilarious and his knowledge is awesome! El Trapiche is a family business with a cute shop. The coffee we bought there is for sure the best one I ever had - make sure you try or buy the honey roast or my favorite - the natural roast 🤩🤩🤩
One of the best educational tours around for the money. We had a great time and great learning experience. I now know a hell of a lot more about what makes quality chocolate and coffee now. Go if you get the chance and also have some free samples of everything there. Bought all the coffee samples to enjoy back home and now I'm reordering on the web.
El Trapiche was extremely interesting. You will learn all about coffee, suga and Cocoa and how they are grown in Costa Rica. You will get to try multiple types of coffee, cocoa and even make you own sugar candy.
This tour was a highlight of our monteverde trip. They show you so many things and you get to sample the coffee, cane sugar (off the cane as well as a local candy), cocoa, as well as a local root vegetable dish.
Highly recommended.
We loved the tour! We learned about the entire coffee process, the chocolate process and got to make and bring home our own raw sugar. We also got to eat some chocolate, drink coffee that was prepared for us at the end of the tour, and had a delicious snack. Bought lots of coffee to bring home as well!

Excellent tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and humorous. Good for all ages.
An excellent tour with an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide (surprisingly enthusiastic given that he probably does this every day). Highly recommended if you want to learn about the process that gets coffee beans into the bag you buy. Even if you're not into learning about the process, there's coffee, chocolate, and caramel tasting to keep you engaged.
Sergio was very informative during the tour and knowledgeable about all the processes. The Coffee and chocolate were wonderful and enjoyed the brown sugar candy! Definitely recommend this tour if you are in the Monteverde area!
Excellent tour. I quite liked it. Our guide Hiro, was excellent and very informative. I learned a lot about coffee that I did not know. Should be noted that this is more of a sugar Plantation and that they have coffee bean plants more for show than anything else. We got to learn about the entire process from harvesting the sugar canes to making sugar. We even got to take some sugar home. And we're also as involved with the coffee making experience. There was nice coffee and snacks at the end. I would highly recommend this to her.
This was a very fun tour!! The guide was just fantastic! You get a good inside, interactive look at what it takes to produce chocolate and coffee.
Worth doing once to learn about coffee making, sugarcane crop and chocolate and cocoa production.
Good place to know how chocolate is made. Guide Nazare is kind
A must see.the tour is well paced and you can try the coffee, sugar and cacao through all different steps of the production. The Don Juan tour is very commercial and lost the personal touch. El Trapiche tour treat you as family.
Family owned and ran. Great place to learn about coffee and purchase some to take home!
Way to go Jairo! What an interesting & fun tour. Never felt rushed, never bored. Got to make, taste the sugar, the cocoa at different points in their processes. At the end, we sat down & had coffee, espresso and a specially made food. So accommodating!!
The very friendly and knowledgeable staff makes this worth the while. You will learn how to make chocolate, candy from cane juice, and all about coffee production. Great tour!
Absolutely amazing tour. Learned so much about coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane! Get their peaberry coffee!
Great tour with an excellent guide! Three tours in one - coffee, chocolate and sugarcane with a focus on traditional methods.
There were two options for a coffee tour when looking at our hotel's list of activities: El Trapiche and Don Juan. After the tour, we were very glad to have chosen El Trapiche! The guide was very knowledgeable, and the tour includes coffee, cocoa (you get to taste the raw bean straight from a freshly opened pod), sugar cane, and distilled sugar cane liquor! They let you taste the raw sugar cane and even make your own raw cane sugar candy from some fresh pressed & boiled cane juice reduction. There were even some fresh bananas to try. Finally, at the end of the tour there is fresh coffee, espresso, lemonade and traditional local food. Every aspect of the tour was great, and there was so much content all packed into one tour that if you have to pick just one, this is the one to get much variety. If you're looking for a more detailed cocoa tour that has more information about the history of cocoa and chocolate, there is also a great tour in the Sarapiqui area at Tirimbina Rainforest lodge. We went on both, but this one was much more varied, so had less focus on just the cocoa. As such, this tour is still a great overall overview for many locally grown & made products.
This tour was absolutely worth the price of admission! Three tours in one: coffee, chocolate (cocoa) and sugar cane. It's a family run business with a sincere appreciation and excitement for what they do. I loved the hands on and engaging parts of the tour and all of the tasting opportunities! My boys loved it- plus they got to make their own natural candy. It's runs about 2.5 hours and they even provide a snack with coffee at the end. Must do!
