One, amazing coffee. The espresso was great. The coffee-fig-shake was unreal. So good. Two, amazing host. The owner really is down to earth. He’ll chat you up and tell you everything you need to know about the coffee he grows. Best coffee in Arenal, hands down.

Matias and his daughter made us feel like honored guests our 1 hour tour turned into a 3 hour conversation and Coffee Seminar! Absolutely the best coffee I have ever tasted! You know that smell of coffee when you open the bag??? It is supposes to taste like that!! Who knew! This place has 5 stars on Google and it is very well deserved Thank you Matias for an amazing visit!

This review is about having coffee here - we didn’t go on the tour. That being said

The coffee is amazing! By far the best I’ve had in Costa Rica, and among the best I’ve had anywhere. My husband and I got the ‘exotic’ cappuccinos (sweetened with figs or coffee berries instead of sugar). At ~3,000 colones per coffee, they were definitely on the expensive side, but worth it as a special treat. Recommended!

We stumbled upon Down To Earth because it was across the street from our hotel. We had no idea this coffee shop and the owner, Matias, would be one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. We enjoyed the coffee and conversation so much that first day, we decided to return the next day for a coffee tour. It was really hands-on and we learned so much about coffee. Whether you take the tour, stop by for a cup, or just pick-up a bag of this delicious coffee, Down to Earth is a must in La Fortuna!

We were fortunate enough to snag a coffee farm tour with Matias at his location in La Fortuna. He has his producing coffee trees in San Jose, but has a location in La Fortuna (on the way to La Fortuna Falls) where he hosts educational farm tours and also serves coffee beverages. Since we were there during low season, we were given a private educational class about the coffee beans, how they come to grow, how he transplants the plant from soil to bag and the process from berry to roasted bean. As someone who is not a "snob" or highly educated about coffee, I found the entire tour was extremely educational and interesting to learn. It was a great time going through the trees and picking the beans off the tree and then learning the entire process of what makes a coffee bean.

I highly recommend Down to Earth if you want an educational breakdown on how a coffee is produced and also how you can tell the difference between truly good coffee versus chemically enhanced coffee.

Also like to add we bought a bag of his medium roast beans and enjoyed every sip of it once we were home!

You will be rewarded with the best coffee brewed for you from the local Arabica beans by the owner and coffee enthusiast. Thank you, Matias. What an interesting time my family and I had. Mattias showed us how coffee plants are grown from seed to seedling to tree. It was the most fascinating time. I will never look at or enjoy a cup of coffee the same way again. I now have the knowledge to help me get the best coffee.

I highly recommend the tour.
