Amazing place to visit and the tour was wonderful. My 22 month old son loved it as well and was interested in the fruits and activities along the way. Wonderful family and farm. Worth the visit if you're in the area.
Highly recommend! Much more than learning about making chocolate. If you want to feel like guests on a family owned organic farm and meet wonderful people, taste delicious fruits and chocolate, do this! We were just looking for a way to spend a few free hours one afternoon and ended up finding this was one of the highlights of our trip. Mauricio, Otto, and their family are incredible hosts.
If you have children with you, this is the chocolate tour for you!! The man who did our tour loved kids and was constantly stopping to show them different things. Our children were engaged the entire time.
He started out showing us the various fruit they have growing on their plantation. I have never had pineapple that tasted so good in my life!! We were fascinated by the ice cream bean, and couldn't get enough of it. We saw fresh peppercorns, a vanilla orchid, avocados, peppers, and so many different flowers. The friendly guide has extensive knowledge about the plants.
The sugar cane tasting was great, we got to chew on a piece raw, then taste the juice after a piece was run through their juicer. The rum made from the sugarcane juice is not to be missed!
After this we started in on the cocoa, he takes you right through the entire process, you taste a bean right off the tree and he walks you through not only the way they process it but the history of chocolate as well.
At the end, we topped things off with the most amazing hot chocolate I've ever tasted. This was one of the best things we did the entire 3 weeks we spent in Costa Rica. They are passionate about what they do, worth every penny!
I adored my visit to this family-run farm. Willy was an entertaining and engaging host. He explained the process of how cacao is turned into chocolate and showed us around their organic farm. We were able to sample sugar cane juice, fruits, and delicious chocolate. The tour was worth every penny.
Great tour. Not a big factory but a small family farm. Minor is very knowledge about the plants and you get to try in season fruit. My kids loved picking the cocoa pods and pressing the sugar cane. My family thought they were doing me a favor by going but they ended up loving it.
Awesome chocolate tour! We sampled lots of farm grown tropical fruits, and lots of chocolate. The guide was knowledgeable, funny, energetic, nice, and polite. We got to see the way chocolate is made from scratch. Great experience for a good price.
Fantastic tour I highly recommend it. It’s a great experience from beginning to end: chocolate tasting ! The tour guide is very knowledgeable and funny !
Great tour of a family-run operation. It's like dropping in on a friendly neighbour who wants to show you around, gives you pieces of fruit from all his trees, makes you a mug of hot chocolate (plus a shot of his home made rum). Otto, the father doesn't speak English, but keeps up the supply of fruit and chocolate, while one of his sons does the tour (in English), proudly showing all the food and medicinal plants his grandfather planted.
I've been in other countries in other chocolate classes/tours before, and in chocolate museums, all of which were excellent. This tour topped them all.walking all about the farm, learning about the land and plants, all the while sampling several great fruits right of the trees/etc.
These guys were great. Very interesting to learn how chocolate is made from a farmers perspective. Don't miss this place!
Pleasantly surprised by the generosity and information that this small privately owned farm/cacao plantation offered! “Minor”, our guide this day, carries on the care of his families traditional plants, and the whole family is involved. Tasting opportunities galore! Fruit, sugar cane, chocolate, etc. FRESH. Pride shines through in this small but loved operation.
This tour is family owned and it's great. Our tour guide was Josue, the owners son. He did a great job at keeping us entertained and very informed about the history of their farm and cacao. They made us fresh cane water, which was delicious and of course a taste of cacao. By the end we were given hot chocolate and cookies. Very good tour 😃
Don't eat before this tour! You'll try many amazing fruits Minor and his family have grown on their farm. I've experienced this tour twice now and it's still my favorite!! Be sure to use bug spray before you go!
Wonderful experience. Kind family. Very knowledgeable about fruit and chocolate. Samples of fruit given. The whole experience was so much fun. Would book again.
We had the best time at Don Olivo's!! We saw a lot of wonderful things in Costa Rica, but this was the highlight of our trip. The fruit was amazing, the sugar cane juice was amazing, and most important the chocolate was amazing!!! The family is so knowledgeable and friendly. It was just delightful. I recommend you call a few hours ahead so they can get everything ready for you.
Absolutely fantastic tour!! Our leader was animated, a great storyteller, playful and funny, and offered super thorough explanations during the tour. We sampled many fresh fruit and delicacies home grown on the property. Of course, the chocolate portion was the best By far the most interesting process and delectable natural chocolate! Highly recommend this tour above other gimicky unoriginal ones offered to tourists.
A fantastic tour, very informative and fresh fruit from the plant, chocolate, hot chocolate and rum. Great price, great experience.
What an awesome tour! Small family farm that has been run for 90 years, the owner/operator was so passionate about each and everyone of the plants growing on the farm, including cacao, papaya, avocado, and many, many more. Tasted juicy fresh papaya - probably the best we have ever had, some excellent sugarcane juice and of course great chocolate as part of the tour. Had some great discussions with the owner on cooking the Indian vs Costa Rican style, the similarities, the differences. Would give this tour 6 or 7 stars if possible, but 5 is the max.
Entertaining and not too touristy. I enjoyed trying some tropical fruits and seeing cacao trees in person. Trying fresh sugar cane was also a big plus. I definitely recommend it.
It was very enlightening to learn what makes chocolate possible. The guide did a good job of entertaining and explaining. This is a small family operation. We really enjoyed it and would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about how chocolate is made.
Had a ton of fun! Small family run farm that was somewhat informal, but very hands on and informative. The guide was quite knowledgeable and they let us help out with almost all parts of the chocolate making process. You also get to sample all the while. They also let us taste some of the other delicious fruits grown on the farm, and press our own sugar cane drink.
