I have done the cherro chato trail: is not impossible and is not closed. Guides in the city say that there is no trail or that is closed and blocked: they simply do not earn any money with it. So sad. Btw, It hard, it may take 5h. Start from the observatory lodge where you pay 10 USD to pass from their property. 40 minutes in the fields and then you will walk in the tropical silent forest. We met maximum 10 people during the hike. Take your time to go down to the crater bottom and swim into the green lake. It s the best not touristic experience that I was looking for in Costa Rica. Take enough water with you. When you come back, on the asphalted road, stop in a colorful hammock/ towel shop, Neptunus, on the right. The owner, Daniel, will make you laugh a lot, share some beer and music. If you wanna release the stress, ask him about his " Lamborghini". The rest is a surprise
An amazing experience great hike the lake at the top. You must have endurance proper of footwear and water as it takes 2 to 4 hours to make it up the mountain in about the same amount to go down. If it rains it will be very hard to climb as there a're different terrain levels. This mountain will test your endurance it's both excitingand dangerous at some parts of the hike very little markings if you like adventures and I bowled this would be a place to go
The walk (hike/test of endurance/suicide mission) was fun up until the point where I lost the will to continue (about 1km from the lake) it then turned into a battle of will to accomplish the mission. The last 1km is quite extreme, especially if rain has fallen. Slippery and hazardous conditions that are bordering on dangerous at points. After 3 hours of climbing I just had to finish it. The lake is pretty but can be shrouded in mist. Unfortunately, as it takes 4 hours to hike there and 3 hours back, you won't get much time to look!
Well worth the adventure. Just ensure you are properly equipped. Footwear, Water, clothing and endurance training. Good luck
Beautifull spot, if you're in good shape, you'll be fine. It's not really closed. Watch out for the snakes!
This trail is currently closed.
The Government have closed and physical fenced off both the east and west Cerro Chato trails to the public and guides. The trails are in bad shape.
Some may wish to ignore the warning signs and continue at their own risk, but this is against the Gov. Park Reserve warnings.
The hike was difficult, with many steep rises and use of arms. If you want to get to the surface of the water there's an even more steep path down to it. It's lots of fun, but I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't feel like they're in fairly good shape.
