Don Juan was our first dinner upon arrival to Cartagena and our last for good reason. The food is delicious. The first time i had the corvina and when we dined again i had the ribeye and both were deliciously paired and seasoned. My only complaint is the red wine, it maybe a cultural thing but the red wine is always served chilled unless requested at "clima" which is room temperature. The service was executed nicely by Karina. She removed the appetizer with its plates without rushing us and gave good descriptions of items we didnt know. We also never lifted a finger to refill our own wine because she was on it. For dessert we tried the cake soaked in white wine, eggs and sugar with the topping of chocolate ice cream and almonds, the torrejas i believe. It almost tasted like bread pudding and was delicious!
Food was good, cocktails were great, service was very poor we had to flag a waiter for service after waiting for everything. would of ordered more drinks and food if service was not so horrible.
Nothing too wrong, per se, but nowhere near as stellar as some of these reviews suggest. Partly down to puzzling off putting little aspects like plastic cocktail swizzles prominently branded with MasterCard’s logo poking out of my wife’s drink. Our waitress also opened the wine and poured for tasting a minute after bringing my gin/tonic. Grilled octopus followed. Tasty, a bit tough, bacon cubes, also very chewy, were sprinkled on top, tasty, not the best pulpo this week. Had the lamb, partner had tenderloin. Well presented and prepared as was dessert, however pineapple cube flambé could have a bit more glamour and again, the mains were equal, not head and shoulders above, other nice joints in town. In short, we’re a bit perplexed at the hoopla.
This was our best meal in Cartagena. I wish we had known about it earlier, because we would have eaten here twice! It's packed, so get a reservation if you possibly can, but if you can't, and are willing to wait, you can also eat at the bar, which is what we did. The drinks were delicious, and the food was so good we ate every single morsel. Service was excellent, and everyone spoke enough English to get the job done.
Good place and food. I would recommend more training on personnel about the quality of the wines they have.
I understand why Donjuan Cartagena shows up first when one searches for Cartagena restaurants. My wife and I walked into a very busy restaurant at 7:30 without a reservation, not realizing how busy the restaurant would be. The staff asked us if we would be willing to wait 20 minutes, we said of course, we were seated in 5. The staff is extremely busy yet entirely attentive, patient with people who dont speak Spanish well or at all. The menu is very interesting, something for everyone and the food is phenomenal. We dont drink alcohol but they seem to have an extensive wine list and were gracious when I asked for a limonade and my wife a non-alcoholic mojito. The atmosphere is energetic but not loud, busy but the staff is very attentive, and we never felt rushed. The food is delicious and artistically presented in the plates. The chocolate cake is made to order and well worth the asked for 15 minute wait. The prices are beyond reasonable; if I lived closer I would come to Cartagena just to eat dinner here. Thank you for providing such a memorable meal for Melanie and I. Vito
Sea bass on lemon risotto is out of this world. Mango crumble for dessert was also amazing. Would eat anything this place serves.
This is a good restaurant in Cartagena.
The positive points: The food is really good. The ambiance and decor are nice. You should make a reservation.
Points to improve: Service is not the best. The servers need training and a good floor manager; also better uniforms. The menus should look nice not like they were printed years ago for the price and level of this restaurant.
Cartagena is swarming with delicious seafood places and quality restaurants. We ate spectacular food at La Mulata, La Cevicheria, Demente, and La Cocina y Pepina. Don Juan was the worst by far. Firstly, the prices are high for Cartagena, and the food is much worse than many other places relative to cost. Secondly, our servers were not especially kind or attentive. No one said thank you or seemed appreciative of our visit, and we were rushed through the service. It felt indifferent and sterile, without much personality. I would recommend many other places first.
As many great places we visited, this was probably our favorite. Excellent flavors and combinations on appetizers and entrees, good cocktails too
We thought of having our wedding dinner here. I am glad we didn't. Went last night ( they open 7-11 but kitchen seems to be closing at 10:30pm ) and it was disappointing. Servers weren't any kind or attentive. They only have one house wine by the glass so they seem to be pushing you to buy by the bottle. Beer selection is not varied at all either. They have liquor if you're into that.
Now the menu reads amazing however the description surpasses the dishes they brought us. A couple of appetizers, a sort of octopus carpaccio that only had lemon and olive oil hints and a few pieces of cilantro( we asked the waiter to get us more, which he did but not very gracefully, bringing us a bit more to garnishthe shrimp appetizer was a bit better but nothing memorable either. We ordered only a main that it seemed to disappoint the waitersthen a waitress just dropped our dish and kept walking no acknowledgement no attentionit was supposed to be a Sea bass over a beet hummus and arugulawhich in reality was the sea bass ( ok ) over a beet sauce and a bit of salad. Again we ask for lemon and bread and again we got long faces from staff. We are from NYC and yes we can be a bit picky eaters. We arrived to Cartagena and went to Santa Clara restaurante ( amazing service and gorgeous location ) as well to next door bar Alquimico excellent tapas bar and many other places. So our comparison is with competing restaurants in the area, not just personal preference. I would spend your money elsewhere.
Had an amazing experience here! The food was wonderful. Excellent!!!
You should make a reservation to go to Donjuán, which is totally worth it. The Food was amazing. We had the pulpo first, then I had the quinoa salad with shrimps (which was delicious) and my friends had the Wellington steak and the ribeye. They said that it was the best they had in Colombia. Afterwards we ordered the chocolate cake, which takes 25 minutes (they tell you that in advance!). It was amazing too! Our waiter was great, he didn't forget about us and did rush us either. It's very rare to find this kind of service in Colombia. Thank you for a great dinner!!!
Great food, beautiful ambiance and good service makes the experience wonderful!
Great food, great drinks. Try the caipiripina (pineapple caipirinha) cocktail. The grilled octopus is amazing.
