I was very excited to stay here for some climbing, we brought our own shoes and harness, but needed a guide and rental gear because we have never lead climbed before. No problem, I would just pay the hostel for those services.
We were greeted in a bit of a lack lustre manner by a tired looking employee, but we arrived at night so I suppose that's fine.
The facilities, food, bar, environment are all spectacular, PERFECT 5 stars, it's really a special place with great food and drink. The reason I rated 3 stars is because we didn't get to climb. The night we arrived I asked about guides the following day and received all relevant information except that there would be no guides the following day.
The day we were going to climb I was unsympathetically told "there are no guides today, they are resting". So unfortunately we didn't get to climb at the hostel we specifically booked to go climbing at. Fortunately, the environment is rich to explore so our day wasn't wasted.
From most of the staff we received friendly greetings and smiles, but from about 3 staff, who looked like perpetually looked like they just woke up, we received no hospitality.
I would recommend staying here if you are looking to take in the nature + have nice accommodations, or if you are experienced enough to do your own lead climbing.
There are so many little things that could make this place so great but I found myself frustrated. The staff were semi-helpful at best. Ricardo was amazing and that is why we were keen to stay there, however they really need a better system for getting into the climbing park and the fact it doesn't open until after 10am and even then sometimes the "ranger" still isn't there. Waiting around to go climbing is frustrating. The whole ticket thing was an ordeal for our group more than once. Also that they charge you per day for dishes is ridiculous. I understand a deposit and fees for damage but a daily rental, come on. The restaurant is extremely expensive they are definitely catering to rich people who are there for the view not for the climbing. That being said the climbing is amazing however it is definitely going to be better if you're an 11+ climber as most of the "easier" routes don't seem to be graded appropriately. Also the bugs are crazy! So be prepared for showers filled with mosquitos and definitely sort out a way to fix your bug net over your bed.
What an unfriendly place. We where there when they where full and we got send of in a very rude way. Don‘t go there.
They live of the reputation created by Lonely Planet but meanwhile the place cannnot be recommended anymore except for the scenery. Unorganized, unfriendly, incompetent and not helpful staff. Especially annoying is the handling of the entrace to the climbing park - La Mojarra - changing the rules day by day and person by person and setting up test procedures. We recommended to drive a little bit further and go to one of the many small and friendly hostals along the way to Chiccamocha Canyon.
I stayed two nights in the Refugio la Roca. I was traveling by myself and I didn't really like my experience there. The dorms were empty and the other guests were couples. Not the best setup to meet and exchange with people. Definitely the spot is really amazing, clean and beautiful. The employees there were ok but not really warm. Furthermore everything sold were amazingly expensive (you even have to rent cutleries and casseroles for cooking).
For my third night I moved to one other hostel close to, and it was much more appreciable for me. Manuel, the receptionist, was really kind and I appreciated my meetings there.
Es un lugar muy bonito, se pueden hacer muchas actividades entre esas escalar. Un lugar muy bueno para ir en pareja
Incredible place to relax in the hills and spend a few days. We went from 3 and ended up staying a week. Great of you like climbing too as plenty of routes on their doorstep
A must go for any climber. Even if you don't climb, there are plenty of other activities to do such as hiking or mountain biking. The staff are super accommodating and helpful. An absolute must go while in Colombia.
Gran vista y muchas actividades disponibles. Gran atención
This Is the best hostal in la mesa
Excelente y economico hostal! Perfectas vista y acrividades, buena atencion
The best place to climb in Colombia. Over 300 routes with breath-taking views. Great lodging accommodations with superb vibs and a great restaurant. Definitely recommend.
