If you speak anything but Spanish, good luck. The only minimally English speaking staff when we arrived was asleep on the desk and had little interest in actually working, that is helping us to translate. Seemed both uninterested and unconcerned - big smile on her face didn't help. When we finally got to see a doctor, he too spoke NO English. I was able to communicate as I had the foresight to use google translate to describe the problem in Spanish. Beyond that answering questions was a matter of charades. They were painfully slow in preparing for and actually catheterizing hubby who was obviously in pain. Next thing I know, he's admitted for observation and they've ordered blood tests, scans and a specialist consult, all this despite my explaining (through a very helpful lady whose husband was a patient) we knew what the problem was, it wasn't new, happens occasionally, we have a specialist appointment at home and we're scheduled to leave within 48 hours. I finally called International SOS, a service for travelers, and their doctor concurred that anything other than catheterization was not immediately necessary. They tried to have a Spanish speaking doctor call but NO ONE ANSWERED THE PHONE. SOS called me back and fortunately the doctor was with us at the time. The SOS doctor was able to get us a discharge.

We were asked to wait and finally figured out the delay in being able to leave was having to wait for the billing guy to process us and reconcile against the 300,000 COP deposit required to be seen. Just so you know, you can't refuse service and just walk out. There is a barred door at the front with a guard so if you don't show you've paid the bill, you aren't getting out.

When we arrived back at our hotel, it became apparent that the catheter was leaking. The prospect of returning to the hospital was unnerving to say the least. Fortunately for us, the hotel had a nurse on staff who was able to correct the connection problems so we could return as scheduled. The Occidental Hotel Estelar Grand Playa Manzanillo was beyond amazing! They didn't even charge us for the services of the nurse! Upon our return home, hubby went for removal of the catheter and was told that it was a sloppy job that resulted in some bleeding and has been put on antibiotics to prevent infection.

In summary, if you speak no Spanish - good luck. And if you suffer more serious complications, pray because they can't even get a simple procedure right.

Hopefully you will not need the services here but we did. The check in and triage for pediatric was very quick and efficient. The facility was clean. The staff professional and compassionate. The cost was a pleasant surprise compared to the exorbitant fees in North America.

Stay Away. This hospital has a well deserved reputation as the final destination for many patients that if treated anywhere else would still be alive today. If you have an emergency go to Nearby Medihelp but if you have the choice, head towards Barranquilla for better options.
