  Hotel quite far from subway and shopping area but nearby west lake. Hotel facilities are a bit old , seem like havent have any renovating. Good service from very polite staffs.

  Hangzhou is a beautiful city and the West Lake area is rich with history and scenic views. Be sure to stop by all of the historic top ten points. (Plan on at least two days for that.) The new ten, third evaluation, temporary palace eighteen, etc. are also good, but the historic ten are where it's at.
  
  Grab some street food on your way around and make sure to have a few RMB available for the boat ride to the island and Leifeng Tower. It's a little annoying that they cost money, but in terms of USD, they're both dirt cheap.
  
  If you're looking for a souvenir t-shirt, you're out of luck. There are plenty of silk products, postcards, magnets, and fake jewelry baubles though. Haggle for everything. You'll have people hawking photos in period silk gear too. Personally, I doing understand the appeal, but it seems like the activity is pretty popular with domestic tourists.
  
  A note to my fellow English speakers: don't be that guy. Know a little Chinese and be ready to communicate with people who don't know any English at all. Most people here don't--don't act like that's their problem. Google translate is your friend. Just make sure you've downloaded the Chinese pack before you get here. Google won't work behind The Great Firewall. (Bing does, just FYI.)

  The "delicatessen Corner" is pretty mediocre in comparison to Shanghai's Sangri-La. Like heaven and hell !! But the green tea cookies are fine.
