Pandrillus Cameroon - Limbe Wildlife Centre

Cameroon

Established in 1993, Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) is a wildlife rehabilitation education centre based in the Limbe Zoological Garden, South-West Region, Republic of Cameroon. We care for more than 250 threatened and endangered animals rescued from the illegal bushmeat and wildlife trades, including gorillas, chimpanzees, drills, mandrills and baboons. The LWC is managed by the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF) and the Pandrillus Foundation, an US non-profit NGO also registered in Nigeria and Cameroon. We have three aims: 1. To raise awareness among and educate the general public on conservation in Cameroon. We receive almost 50,000 visitors per year, of which 95% are Cameroonians. We also reach more than 1,100 children per year through our education outreach programme, and provide training in behavioural ecology and veterinary science to Cameroonian and international students.2. To provide green economy employment opportunities to local communities as an alternative to hunting; benefiting some 500 community members. 3 To provide high quality care to confiscated poaching and animal trade victims. The ultimate goal of the LWC, where possible, is to rehabilitate individuals for reintroduction to restore wild populations. We also support national law enforcement efforts.
