Wonderful Lodge, wonderful service. I have been there twice (2017) and the last time the cuisine had really improved a lot thanks to a chef form Chile. The rangers are very kind and visiting gorillas is a life-time experience. Going there back soon

Lovely lodge amidst the Rain forests of Congo. Very well. Managed just like the other Virunga locations. Blue monkeys, colobus monkeys ,baboons, gorillas, antipoaching hounds Lots to explore. Very helpful staff n a relaxing place.

I recently visited Virunga National Park with my wife, and we stayed one night at Mikeno Lodge. The lodge is located at Rumangabo, the administrative heart of the park. There’s a staff’s “tent village” in the hillside just above the lodge, and the once beautiful administrative buildings from the colonial era are on the hilltop above the staff’s village; but unless you go for a walk up there, you won’t notice, because the rain forest surrounding the lodge kind of shields it from the surrounding world. This sheltering of the lodge from the outside gives it a very relaxed atmosphere, making it a perfect place to “charge your batteries” prior to a gorilla or volcano trek, and also an ideal place to relax afterwards.

The lodge has a number of cottages of various sizes, and so you may book single, twin, or double accommodation depending on your need. This southern sector of the park is located within a volcanic area, and the cottages are all beautifully built of black volcanic stones that have been hewn out of solidified lava; and then cement has been used to bind the stones together. On the inside the cottages are quite luxurious. In the one cottage that we rented for a night, there was a large room that served as combined living room and bedroom, with a large fireplace in the far end, and a king size bed just opposite the entrance. To the right of the entrance was a door leading into the bathroom, which had a shower, a washbasin, and a toilet; all with running water including hot water for the shower and the washbasin.

Mikeno Lodge is located about 1600 meters above mean sea level, hence it tends to get a little chilly in the evening and at night; especially so in the dry season. While we were up in the main building for dinner, however, the staff had lit a fire in the fireplace, and so our cottage was nice and warm at bedtime.

The main or reception building, where even the bar is located, and where all the meals are served, has no wall to the north; and so much of it is actually a huge thatched roof above an open area (in Swahili called a kibanda), with the open area even extending onto a large dining terrace beneath a couple of large trees located just off the terrace. There’s a nice fireplace even on this dining deck, and at chilly evenings the guests of the lodge tend to come together around the fire, thereby contributing to the cosy atmosphere of the place. The terrace offers a beautiful view towards the north, and at night you may see the lights of the towns of Rutshuru and Kiwandja.

The lodge is located just five minutes walk away from the gorilla orphanage at Rumangabo. There’s a path through the forest leading to the orphanage, and signs showing which path to follow. In the forest in which the cottages of the lodge are located, there’s a lot of blue monkeys as well as colobus monkeys; and on the day of our arrival we even saw a herd of baboons.

The location of Mikeno Lodge is quite close to Katale Airstrip, from where we headed by plane to Lulimbi the following morning; Lulimbi being another great Virunga location. The Mikeno Lodge is, however, also ideally located for a gorilla trek in the rain forests of Mount Mikeno, the dormant volcano from which the lodge got its name; and moreover, it is also well suited as accommodation before and after a trek to the very much alive and active Nyiragongo volcano that has a lava lake in the bottom of its crater. While staying at Mikeno Lodge, it is also possible to have a chimpanzee habituation walk in the Tongo forest, though it starts out very early in the morning, and it might not be possible to do on the same day as you visit Nyiragongo or the gorillas.

We did indeed soak in the very relaxed atmosphere at Mikeno Lodge, and I also shot a lot of nice photos while we were there. Whenever we visit Virunga again, I am most certain we’re going to book at least another night at Mikeno Lodge; but preferably two nights, so we won’t miss the chimpanzees once again

Great service, tasty food and comfortable bungalows with round the clock hot water and electricity. You can see lots of monkeys and they won't hassle you at all. The gorillas are wonderful to see as well. It's worth watching the virunga documentary on Netflix before you come to appreciate what you are investing in.

Absolutely breathtaking. A great place for the adventurer to rest their head while going to and from the volcano and gorilla taking. Well worth the cost.
