Description
"Woodland Creatures" features raccoons and an owl with the illusion of movement, and it was designed in consultation with the Thompson family which has been in the area for seven generations. The carving took several weeks to complete.
The Thompson family came forward with the idea of a special sculpture in Greenwood Cemetery. Evelyn Thompson says the family wanted to dedicate a sculpture to the memory of her parents, Eileen and Norman Thompson, and what they cherished. "We grew up in a large family where things that mattered could be found within yourself - respect, responsibility, and love for one another. A close second was the nature around us providing wonderful, soothing, and adventurous times throughout our lives." Her parents admired "The Farmer" sculpture that local artist Jim Menken had carved on Broadway, as well as each new addition to Orangeville's Art Walk of Tree Sculptures. So it was only fitting to commission a sculpture featuring woodland creatures to match the peaceful surroundings of Greenwood Cemetery and to honour the memory of Ms. Thompson's parents.
