    Intel tells users to stop deploying buggy Spectre patch

    Intel has a patching problem. All last week, users reported computers spontaneously rebooting after installing Intel’s Spectre/Meltdown patch. Now, Intel seems to be giving up on those patches entirely. In a post today, executive vice president Navin Shenoy announced that Intel had located the source of some of the recent reboot problems and is recommending users skip the patches entirely until a better version could be deployed.

    “We recommend that OEMs, cloud service providers, system manufacturers, software vendors, and end users stop deployment of current versions on specific platforms,” Shenoy wrote, “as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior.”

    The guidance applies to at least some of the processors from Intel’s last several generations of chips, with affected models in the Broadwell, Haswell, Coffee Lake, Kaby Lake, Skylake, and Ivy Bridge families. Certain lines are affected more than others — only Ivy Bridge datacenter/workstation processors are included, for instance — but at least some chips from most recent consumer lines appear to be impacted.

    Intel says that it’s identified the issue behind the unexpected reboots on Broadwell and Haswell processors and is working toward releasing an update that addresses the exploits without causing that issue. The same issues have been happening on Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake processors too; Intel says it’s “actively working on developing solutions” for those platforms as well.

    The Meltdown and Spectre bugs required a vast number of quickly assembled patches, including browser and operating-system-level fixes — but the patches to processors themselves are widely considered the most difficult task for the recovery. Shortly after the vulnerability became public, Microsoft was forced to halt AMD’s Spectre patch after it rendered some computers unbootable.

    A member of Congress has asked Intel and AMD to explain the danger consumers face from the chip vulnerabilities

    A Democratic U.S. lawmaker asked Intel and two other microchip makers on Tuesday to provide a briefing on the recently detected Spectre and Meltdown security flaws that could allow hackers to steal information from most computers and devices.

    "I am looking to better understand the nature of these critical vulnerabilities, the danger they pose to consumers, and what steps your companies plan to take to protect consumers," California Representative Jerry McNerney wrote to the chief executives of Intel, Softbank-owned Arm Holdings and Advanced Micro Devices.

    None of the companies immediately responded to requests for comment.

    The request is one of the first responses from the U.S. Congress to the disclosure earlier this month by security researchers of the two major flaws, which may allow hackers to steal passwords or encryption keys on most types of computers, phones and cloud-based servers.

    McNerney, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, asked the companies to explain the scope of Spectre and Meltdown, their timeframe for understanding the vulnerabilities, how consumers are affected and whether the flaws have been exploited, among other questions.

    How to protect your PC against the Intel chip flaw

    A major security flaw has been discovered in many modern processors that could allow hackers to access data -- passwords, encryption keys and other information you want kept private -- stored in the protected kernel memory of your computer, phone or tablet. Known by the names Spectre and Meltdown, the flaws affect chips from Intel and Arm. Intel's rival AMD believes its chips are safe, saying in a statement, "Due to differences in AMD's architecture, we believe there is a near zero risk to AMD processors at this time."

    Install the emergency Windows patch Microsoft has released a rare, out-of-band emergency patch for Windows 10 users. It should pop up and ask you to restart your machine so it can be installed, but if you have yet to receive such a notification, then head to Settings > Update & security see if there are updates waiting on the Windows Update page. If you are running Windows 10 version 1709 (Fall Creators Update), the patch you need is labeled Security Update for Windows (KB4056892).

    Firmware update Because this is a hardware issue, it's a good idea to check with your system's vendor for a firmware update that can add another layer of protection in addition to updating Windows. Contact support for Dell, HP, Lenovo or the manufacturer of your PC or laptop.

    Ransomware victims have paid out more than $25 million, Google study finds

    Ransomware victims have paid more than $25 million in ransoms over the last two years, according to a study presented today by researchers at Google, Chainalysis, UC San Diego, and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. By following those payments through the blockchain and comparing them against known samples, researchers were able to build a comprehensive picture of the ransomware ecosystem.

    Ransomware has become an almost unavoidable threat in recent years. Once a system is infected, the program encrypts all local files to a private key held only by the attackers, demanding thousands of dollars in bitcoin to recover the systems. It’s a destructive but profitable attack, one that’s proven particularly popular among cybercriminals. This summer, computers at San Francisco’s largest public radio station were locked up by a particularly brutal ransomware attack, forcing producers to rely on mechanical stopwatches and paper scripts in the aftermath.     The study tracked 34 separate families of ransomware, with a few major strains bringing in the bulk of the profits. The data shows a ransomware strain called Locky as patient zero of the recent epidemic, spurring a huge uptick in payments when it arrived in early 2016. In the years that followed, the program would bring in more than $7 million in payments.

    Crucially, Locky was the first ransomware program to keep the payment and encryption infrastructure separate from the groups distributing the malware, allowing the malware to spread farther and faster than its competitors.

    “Locky’s big advantage was the decoupling of the people who maintain the ransomware from the people who are infecting machines,” says NYU professor Damon McCoy, who worked on the project. “Locky just focused on building the malware and support infrastructure. Then they had other botnets spread and distribute the malware, which were much better at that end of the business.”

    Other strains soon caught on. Cerber and CryptXXX followed a similar playbook to rake in $6.9 million and $1.9 million, respectively. In each case, the number reflects total payouts made by victims, and it’s unclear how much of the money made it back to the original ransomware authors.

    The same data shows ransomware authors getting smarter about avoiding antivirus software. Once a particular malware program has been identified, antivirus systems typically scan for matching binaries — an identical copy of the recovered program. But modern malware can automatically change the binary once a given strain is detected, a trick that ransomware programs have learned well. Researchers found thousands of new binaries a month associated with the Cerber ransomware, allowing it to skate past many signature-based antivirus systems.

    What is a Zero-Day Vulnerability?

    A zero day vulnerability refers to a hole in software that is unknown to the vendor. This security hole is then exploited by hackers before the vendor becomes aware and hurries to fix it—this exploit is called a zero day attack. Uses of zero day attacks can include infiltrating malware, spyware or allowing unwanted access to user information. The term “zero day” refers to the unknown nature of the hole to those outside of the hackers, specifically, the developers. Once the vulnerability becomes known, a race begins for the developer, who must protect users.

    A ransomware attack is quickly spreading across the globe rendering vital systems inaccessible. Friday morning, the Twitter account MalwareHunterTeam reported ransomware known as WanaCrypt0r (a WannaCry variant) spreading at an alarming rate. “In less than 3 hours (even can say less than 2 hours if we count it from the explosion), they got victims already from 11 countries.” Approximately 6 hours later, at 1pm ET, Kaspersky Lab reported more than 45,000 attacks in 74 countries. “Number still growing fast,” tweeted Costin Raiu, director of global research for the Moscow-based security firm. Error loading media: File could not be played Update: There is a patch for this exploit—see the bottom of the post for instructions. Russia, Taiwan and Spain appear to be those initially hit the hardest, but a map of the infections generated by MalwareTech shows the ransomware spreading to all populated continents, and numerous reports from security researchers indicate that WanaCrypt0r has also found its way into the US.

    An initial report from UK-based MalwareTech researcher indicate that the ransomware was spreading peer-to-peer and may have been weaponized using a leaked Microsoft Windows exploit designed by the U.S. National Security Agency known as EternalBlue. Among those to first report infections publicly are 16 hospitals in England and Telefonica, a Spanish telecom. The infected systems rendered files encrypted and inaccessible and a warning flashed across the screens. “You only have 3 days to submit the payment. After that the price will be doubled,” it reads. “Also if you don’t pay in 7 days, you won’t be able to recover your files forever.”
