A decade of newspaper closures, mergers and cuts had a profound impact on local news coverage, a new Public Policy Forum report shows. In the 20 small- & mid-sized Canadian communities we studied, the number of articles fell by 50% from 2008 to 2017. Coverage of democratic institutions - city halls, courts, legislatures and boards - declined by more than a third. All 20 communities saw declines, whether their newspaper closed or not. The depth of coverage also dropped. We measured five indicators of quality, four of which declined. A bright spot: As a percentage of all articles, civic coverage actually increased to 7% from 6%, perhaps due to newsrooms 'protecting the core' of news coverage. Some background: From 2008 to 2016, 169 local media outlets closed and another 54 reduced services, a trend that accelerated in 2017, notably with swap & closures of 36 papers by Torstar and Postmedia. This PPF study quantifying the decline of news coverage in Canada is the first of its kind, as far as we know. But Canadians need to know much, much more. Are new sources in the disrupted digital and media landscape filling the huge gaps left by traditional media? Are you getting as much news about the democratic institutions in your community - city hall, elected representatives, courts, school and police boards - as you were a decade ago?
