Kindness begins with me.
Being kind does not mean that others can take advantage of you.
Being able to say no is a powerful word and should be shared kindly, and with respect.
If others do not accept a no is a not, their good manners have gone missing and they need to find them.

Follow up on our fish situation.
Dave and I drove to Elmira lunch time and purchased a new pond heater, $130, which we are assure will do the job. So, that means when the 2nd pond heater eventually arrives, if ever, from Canada Post due to it being sent to Ottawa just for fun, we can return that. The pond heater that has a fault can be returned and then we will have that as a standby
Good news, little baby fish #2 is alive and safe close to the bottom of the pond where it's OK to hang out, and we hope the 4 big fish are still alive and well but we can't see them. They maybe in their house, they have two at the bottom black crates you use for storage so that keeps them cosy and warm, we hope.

A day in the life of me
It's been a challenging few weeks, but keeping busy has always been my way. I feel stronger when I can carry on. Not all challenges mean we have to stop - some do obviously.
Someone asked me yesterday how I manage to take care of my two businesses and still maintain a healthy lifestyle, family time, me time etc.
A lot of my work can be done online, via video conferencing and my social media can be taken care of when I am traveling and of course set up to publish at certain times.
It is all about the choices I make, and being organized.
So, today I have sad news:(
You might remember we build a fish pond over a year ago, it's quite deep because we knew we wanted fish this year, and also knew that a deep pond meant the fish could live in the pond all year round.
We purchased a pond heater, knowing that when the weather gets colder here in Ontario it would melt the ice. We also have been doing our best to keep the pump and fountain going. It's quite an effort but Dave in particular has been doing an awesome job.
But our pond heather stopped working, we are sending it back due to it being faulty and it does have a 2 year warranty. We ordered a different make online, forgetting about the delays due to the Canada Post strike. Our pond heater appears to be moving from Mississauga Ottawa and back again if the tracking information is correct.
This morning Dave checked on the fish, the pond pump had fallen over, stopped working and. frozen to the ice was the little baby fish which up until now had been thriving and enjoying life in our pond:(
We are now phoning around in an attempt to purchase a pond heater locally.
I am angry due to the Canada Post strike, all it did was punish innocent people, ie. the public, and sad because our baby fish died. We are hoping that our 4 adult fish survive, we are doing our best.

Oh look at me a newbie motivational speaker - one of my first keynotes Life After Breast Cancer conference, Hamilton Convention Centre
There were 500 women some of who were living with breast cancer at this event. Sadly not everyone can survive breast cancer, it breaks my heart.

Starting a small business does not have to be a scary process. Research, know your target market, competitors and find out how networking enables you to become noticed. Don't try to sell until you have at least a partial brand and some credibility.

I was quite a brand new and shiny business owner when I wrote this article. There was no social media to speak off way back then so I would write articles ( blogs) and submit them everywhere. As you can see this one was published by the Grand Valley Human Resources Professionals Association.
Many years later my thoughts have led me to the point where I now believe that this story relates to much more than its real meaning and the meaning I gave to it re business networking.
The corporate world is a mess, pardon my expression, maybe I should say many of the larger corporate organizations are a mess.
Obviously there has to be a CEO, VP's and the list goes on until we get to the bottom of the long list of labels, people who all work together for one organization.
Sadly I believe everyone has forgotten why they are all working together. It's not for the good of one one or two people, it's for the good of the whole organization.
Working together, for a common goal, where no one person is more important together. Real team work, from the top right down to the bottom is what should be happing and in some cases it's not:(
Obviously CEO's are important people and should not be bothered with trivial every day problems. So how can the word filter through the organization, starting with the managers?
Change, Collaboration, Consistency, three things many large organizations share as their message - from the top.
Sadly the CEO's often as not have no idea that poor management, lack of ethics, professionalism, low moral and anything else you can add to that list pulls the company down. In essence no one cares anymore because the people who should be taking care of the problems to the best of their ability don't want to rock the boat. Or, even do the job they were hired to do.
The Inukshuk Story demonstrates how people can work together for the good of the whole community, not just one or two people.
Is it too much to ask that, at the least, look at why the changes, the collaboration, and the consistency is not happening in the organizations that are not working together, for the good or the organization and not just a few people?
