This restaurant has the best meal I have ever had outside Mexico. Been in 11 countries and this place is the best by far!! Order the Omakase which is a good deal for two considering the food / taste / quality. Great service!! Hide is the best!

Marusan is simply incredible! Everything was fresh and so tasty! The beef tongue curry was outstanding and the price was very affordable! The staff is friendly and Hide the owner is the best!! I love Japanese food and this is one of the best one in Montreal trust me!!! Will definitely go back!

Marusan is simply the best. I held an event here, and the owner and staff catered to my every need. It was my first time at the restaurant, as well as that of all of my guests, and I couldn't have asked for a more perfect venue. Special thanks to Hide for taking care of us!

Marusan is THE spot in town to eat delicious authentic japanese food. It has a very cozy wooden décor and the candle-lit ambience lighting makes it perfect for date nights or drinking with your friends. Food is incredibly tasty and the seasonal menu keeps it fresh.

Marusan has a host of privately imported premium Sakes for all the amateurs that want to go way beyond what SAQ offers, I personally recommend trying one from the "Mie" region.

The staff is amazingly efficient, kind and will make sure you have a good experience.

Well I grew up in Japan and always felt Montreal lacked a good Japanese resto. When I went to marusan, I felt like I finally found a passport which I couldn't go home. Everything is great there. Food, service, decor, vibe. It was so good I almost cried but I just kept eating. Would go back anytime!!! Thank you for being here!

A very chic, clean, modern new fast Japanese food in old port! This is a definitely a must stop by place when you want to snack, yummy Japanese kitchen dishes. Their Maki rolls are great and super cheap! Try their happy hours!

A very pleasant experience. We walked in without reservation on a Saturday evening and luckily got a table right away. Food was very good, we ordered a beef tartare and an eel rice bowl, both were very delicious. Reasonable prices too ! Recommended.

Good service, and seemingly caring staff. I've been there about 3 times (at around noon time) before this time and the sushis were good and priced remarkably cheaply (about 5.50$ for 8) for the quality. However, they seem to change the menu for the evening, which lots of restaurants do, understandably. I had plans for valentines with my significant other, and we decided to eat sushi. I arrived at about 4:00 and I placed an medium sized sushi order for 5:15. I was told that the sushis that I usually order are not part of the sushi menu for the evening, and was presented with 3 other options. I ordered 3 salmon ones, 1 makarel and 2 vegi ones. I was briefly told they were square shaped, and I told them I did not mind. Well anyway, I arrive at 5:15 and they tell me it won't take long (about 5 minutes), and the food takes about another 20 minutes to be prepared, despite me stressing to them that I needed it to be ready for 5:15 when I initially placed the order, as I had further plans for the evening. I am fairly sure they simply forgot. Furthermore, the type of sushi that I ordered were either not made to be taken out (from a little search on the internet, they look like 'Oshi Sushi' - 80% rice and a tiny/small strip of fish or vegi puree), or the sushi themselves were stale. I suspect they were just not made to be taken out, as they tasted quite terrible. I ate about 2 of them and threw the rest out (I eat just about anything without any issues), and so did my partner (about 50$ worth, of all 3 variants).

Aside from the significant delay in preparation, I wish they had explained to me what I was about to buy more than a mention of them being "square pressed", especially after mentioning to them many times the day-time sushis that I am used to ordering (which they are NOTHING alike). Anyway, all this to say, that I recommend avoiding their night-menu 'square' sushis for takeout, or, even, perhaps, in general. Furthermore, despite their overwhelming friendliness as you are being served and good day-time sushis (which are the only reasons I am giving 2 stars), the service has the potential to be very bad. I should also mention that the restaurant was nearly empty both when I ordered and arrived for pickup, so in my book, there should be no reason for such poor service. This review should balance out all the good reviews, as it not all candy and roses. This definitely ruined part of my valentines plans. But that is partly my fault - I should have been more inquisitive about what I was ordering and not be charmed by the high ratings they hold on their FB page and previous experiences. I just hope by this review they will explain to people what those sushis are (relative to the type of sushis north americans are used to ordering) and be more punctual with their pickup orders. Despite the fact that I enjoyed the daytime sushis, I will not be coming back - by principle and not feeling respected.
