A very friendly and closely knit community. The classes are mostly conceptual, so you must learn technique on your own. Whatever artistic wisdom you acquire will mostly come from your classmates. Most of the instructors have absolutely no idea what’s going on in the industry, however they are super accessible to students, and a good number of them will stay after class to answer questions etc.

I tried two of their workshops (painting), and they were totally useless. I was very disappointed after the first one but I again took another one because I thought I'd give them another chance. Wrong choice. They basically don't teach you ANYTHING, the instructor sits there finishing his/her own work, and it's you doing your work and then going home. And when you ask questions they say go figure it out yourself, there is no right or wrong in painting! So what's exactly the point of having a teacher?! I suppose I could do that by myself at home without having to pay a few hundred bucks! I have taken some short courses in Europe, and it's not even comparable to what these people do here. They teach you the techniques and inspire you to make creative art work, not just sit there resting and claiming art cannot be taught!! Shame on the art education system here.
And that's not just me, I knew a girl who had finished her BA in fine arts (major in sculpture) here, she also said the same thing, that she didn't learn anything new throughout the 3-4 year program. So she basically finished with what she already knew before applying. Waste of time and money.
Vancouver needs a real art school.

It would be totally unfair to judge since i never studied there, however my 4 star rating is based on general feedback of gratuates in 2 fields. If you are into fine arts digital design, and the whole ui ux areaEmily carr is definetly your aim. If you are into the film industry, it is definetly not the right choice where the majority of all animators and artists who work in animation studios are either VFS students or graduates of american art schools.

Not good enough teachers in this school and with lack of opportunity to express yourself. And not so many technical subjects. I wasn't satisfied with any of my instructors so far! And as an international student, with the fact that English is my second language, I've never felt comfortable and confident to join a discussion in the class. Specially everything is based on North American culture. There is no sharing of various cultures.

Emily Carr Illustration Major
(started in 2013)

If illustration/drawing/painting is what you want to do, don't expect to learn it in the ilus program. You'll learn more on your own/online than here. If you're set on going to emily carr and getting a degree, Animation might be the better program to go with, although i've heard it's a lot of work.

As someone who was interested in concept art, digital painting, and illustration, I found that there was a lack of instruction in technique and foundational skills (perspective, composition, anatomy, color theory, etc). A lot of classes liked to focus on "media exploration", using different charcoals, pencils, inks, etc. Almost all of the studio classes I've had consisted of A) assignments and B) class critiques & discussion, and maybe a short paper. The people who had good work were the people who already knew how to draw and paint.
