Introducing the last of our 2018 Empowering winners!

Since 1986, Dawn House Services and Housing for Women has been supporting homeless and vulnerable women in the Kingston area, providing short-term and permanent housing, as well as programming. Dawn House requires $30,000-$34,000 to finish its Community Kitchen space. With the Community Kitchen space, a Food and Cooking Co-op will be further developed as a member-driven program where women leverage their monthly food budge...t collectively to purchase nutritious food at a discount, planning and cooking healthy meals to be shared equally among the members of the Co-op. The women learn to cook, work together, and build meaningful relationships as a community. Life skills programming is offered, including budgeting, organizing and planning, food handling, cooking, food storage, nutrition and financial literacy training.

Congratulations to the Kingston Community Credit Union on being awarded $25,000 to assist Dawn House in providing meaningful services to the women in the Kingston community.

Introducing the fifteenth of our 2018 Empowering winners!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster (BBBS) has been an integral part of the community for almost 40 years, providing volunteer-based mentoring programs to children and youth who desire a positive, ongoing relationship with a caring mentor. Wheels for Bigs & Littles is a program that transports children to and from mentoring programming free of charge to eliminate the burden of transportation and related financial... barriers. The Wheels for Bigs & Littles program currently operates using a 15-year-old passenger van that is in need of a replacement. The vehicle is used in After School Programming, providing 2,925 rides, as well as for Summer Programming, providing 1,053 rides. The van is also used to provide a designated driving service for community adult events, contributing 45% to 50% of BBBS annual fundraising budget.

Congratulations to Synergy Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 to go toward a new passenger van for the Lloydminster Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Introducing the fourteenth of our 2018 Empowering winners!

The 510 square foot, four patient chemotherapy unit in the Russell Health Centre has been operating, relatively unchanged, since the late 1980’s. In the past 30 years, patient numbers have more than doubled. The need to improve care has been recognized, and the Expanding Community Care (ECCC) Committee is responsible to raise an estimated $610,000 for the renovations approved by the Prairie Mountain Health Region (PMH...) as well as the Manitoba Health Board, increasing the unit to 1400 square feet. The space will provide room for additional patient chairs, privacy for those undergoing treatment, a waiting area, which does not currently exist, and much-needed storage space.

Congratulations to Vanguard-Catalyst Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 to make a difference in the community.

Introducing the thirteenth of our 2018 Empowering winners!

The Glovertown community volunteer fire department services Glovertown and Traytown and provides emergency services over a 150 km road from Clarenville to Gander. The volunteers serve selflessly, giving countless evening and weekend hours to complete training. The small town of approximately 2500 people have been fundraising to cover the expense of building a new fire hall, as the existing hall is old and renovations are not an option.

Congratulations to Venture Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 towards keeping the community safe.

Niverville is one of the youngest and fastest growing communities in southern Manitoba. 2011 census data indicated a population of 3,540, which today is estimated to have grown to approximately 5,000 people. Residents are requesting facilities to help keep young and aging active and thriving. As a result, Niverville is looking to build a new multiplex, envisioned to include a sport and multi-use facility, adjoining arena, and a lobby and administration space, along with an indoor playground. These new, year-round facilities will help meet the needs of our growing community.

Congratulations to Niverville Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 to help the community reach their fundraising goal.

Historically, the Sudbury Food Bank has covered operating expenses through receipt of ‘special operational contributions' from various businesses in Sudbury, rather than through 'donations', proudly informing donors that ALL of their contributions are used to purchase food. Due to a reduction in ‘special operational contributions’ during the challenging economic environment, the Food Bank purchased a hot dog cart to be operational on the grounds of Food Bank property during the Summer months to generate funds.

Congratulations to the Sudbury Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 towards assisting the Food Bank with their Hot Dog Cart initiative.

The Cape Breton Cancer Centre provides treatment for the entire island of Cape Breton, allowing cancer patients to access treatment without the stress and financial burden of traveling. In 2017, the Cancer Center served over 2,000 patients. Cancer patients must bear the burden of medication, travel, and accommodation costs while receiving treatment. The Cape Breton Cancer Centre has a Cancer Patient Fund that aims to mitigate these costs.

The Sydney Credit Union was awarded $10,000 towards elevating some of the financial stress of local cancer patients.

Introducing the eighth of our 2018 Empowering winners!

Constructed in 1966, the Luseland Swimming Pool is one of the few remaining operational Centennial Pools in Saskatchewan. Given its age, the pool continues to have a number of issues including heaving in the deck surface, and failing infrastructure. Committee plans for a new $1.2 million facility envision a beach entry for younger swimmers, a sit-down area for smaller children and their parents, and a large waterslide for... more daring swimmers, plus proper swimming lanes and a diving board. A new service building will provide a much-needed upgrade in the change room areas, as well as an expanded mechanical room. Fundraising officially kicked off on July 1, 2017, and the committee has raised just over $907,678.

Congratulations to Luseland Credit Union on being awarded $10,000 to provide summer fun to the Luseland community!
