PRINCESS MARINA HOSPITAL 4TH STAKEHOLDERS PITSO The management of Greater Gaborone District Health Management Team joined Princess Marina Hospital on its 4th Stakeholders Pitso on the 26th of June 2018. The objectives of the Pitso as delivered by Ms Dikeledi Chilume were as follows: 1. To inform Gaborone District Leadership and surrounding areas on decongestion initiatives 2. To educate them about the importance of block booking system at PMH 3. How the triage system works at Accidents and Emergency 4. To share with the leadership on availability of medicines 5. To educate them about the referral system 6. To solicit support from the leadership by educating their electorates about the above issues Speaking at the event, Princess Marina Hospital Superintendent, Dr Seeletso Nchingane gave a brief background of the hospital. He stated that Princess Marina Hospital is the largest and busiest referral hospital in Botswana serving the southern part of the country. It serves as a primary, district and tertiary hospital. He further went on to state that Princess Marina Hospital is a 567 bedded unit with an average inpatient of 750 patients. There are about 600 nurses and 147 doctors who serve an average of 2500 patients daily in the outpatients departments. The hospital offers a wide spectrum of services both curative and preventive. Since 2009, PMH has started introducing a number of highly specialized services in collaboration with various partners. These services are referred to as “Centers of Excellence” and have seen improvements in quality of care, cost savings, capacity building of local staff, and reduction in complications as well as decrease in mortality rates. The Centers of Excellence are, orthopedic centre of excellence, diabetes centre of excellence, cardiac heart surgery, spinal cord injury rehabilitation, hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, nephrology and organ transplant center of excellence. Seeing how PMH has grown from being a mere district hospital with a few population and few specialties, to a tertiary hospital with state of the art services, Dr Alfred Madigele, Minister of Health and Wellness , encouraged all stakeholders to come together in deliberating on the challenges and successes the hospital faces. Dr Alfred Madigele acknowledged that as a country, the Ministry of Health and Wellness continued to face challenges including emerging diseases and illnesses and financial constraints. He therefore found it fit to encourage key stakeholders to educate communities on the importance of practicing healthy living lifestyles and also for stakeholders to work together for efficient and effective health care outcomes.
