  Bhutan maintains a policy of restricted number of tourists which enable us to earn the foreign currency that our country requires for careful development programmes but also maintains a level which minimize effect to the natural environment and cultural. Visitors are encouraged to come in packages organized by Bhutanese tour operators such as Bhutan Dragon Adventures. The package tour includes all the meals, accommodations, local transportation. Tour guides and entry fees for monuments and museums.

  In my early 50s, (yes, it comes to us all!), I have extensive travel experience in West and North Africa, North and South America, Canada (some trekking in the Rockies), Indian Ocean, most of Europe, Nepal (including 4 treks in the Annapurnas, Langtang & Khumbu) and NW India. I have recently returned from a journey to Bhutan with a focus on the spiritual aspects of their culture. A journey of which I had high expectations. My tour included, amongst other things, attending the Punakha Tsechu (festival) and meditating in monasteries & meeting the monks & nuns. All aspects of arranging my holiday were dealt with promptly and efficiently by Karma Gyeltshen of Bhutan Dragon Adventures. Karma is an extremely spiritual man, of high integrity & honesty. He’s also very down to earth with a good sense of humour. Karma is a very helpful, thoughtful person & he gave me airport assistance on arrival /departure in Paro due to a shoulder injury prior to travel. The shoulder injury was not a minor one & I was not able to put on my walking boots & get my stamina up for long walks prior to departure. It also affected my confidence walking on uneven ground as I was concerned about re-injury. One of the things I wanted to do was get to Tigers Nest - see later. Karma dealt thoughtfully with my dietary requirements (vegetarian and nut / seed allergy). I travelled alone and felt completely safe at all times. I had an SUV/4x4 vehicle which was kept in pristine condition, inside and out, thanks to Pema, our Driver. Pema’s standard of driving was second to none and he was really helpful dealing with car doors / seat belts for me whilst I wasn’t able to do this with a shoulder problem. Drives were broken up into shorter ones, as I did not want to spend any whole days in a car. In anticipation of the twisting roads out of town I sat in the front of the car to avoid travel sickness & this worked really well for me - no nausea at all. I prefer not to take medication if it can be avoided & I didn’t want to feel drowsy & miss the stunning views! I had many opportunities (if I wanted them) to eat out of the hotels & eat in local restaurants. Nothing was ever too much trouble for either Karma or Pema. This included taking time to help me find the right drum, prayer flags and books to take home, and putting up prayer flags on Chili La (pass) in zero degree conditions. In addition, Karma & Pema helped me to get to the 'Cafeteria' area of Tigers Nest whilst feeling safe doing so with no repercussions whatsoever towards my shoulder. This meant a lot to me, as I thought that this would not be possible. They were endlessly patient whilst I took many photos and frequently stopped to chat to local people. Thanks to their flexibility I returned home spiritually & culturally enriched above & beyond my expectations having achieved everything I wanted to - and far more than I could have ever hoped for. Without doubt, this was the best EVER trip I’ve made. I ‘m very much looking forward to my next journey with Karma & Pema in Bhutan in 2015 - AND to making it to Tigers Nest monastery itself as well. TEN STAR EXPERIENCE.Tip for travel to Bhutan from march 2014: travellers cheques take some time to change in Thimpu & Paro (requires phone authorisation from Thimpu) & this is not possible in Punakha.
