It was established as an English-medium school in 1912 by the Congregation of Our Lady of Christian Missions at Luxmi Bazar. After Bangladesh became independent in 1971, the school became a Bengali-medium school.

The school starts at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 1:25 p.m. There are four sections in every class. Each section is named, with names including Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, Hira and Nelkamal. There are about 60 to 70 students in every class. In front of the school building there is a play ground and a basketball court for the students. In 2017 the Education Ministry and the Education board approve this institution as college.

Although it is a missionary school, it is open to students of all religions and castes.

A Century Past St. Francis Xavier's Girls' School & College, situated in Old Dhaka close to the River Buriganga near Sadarghat was founded by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions (RNDM Sisters). Originally the purpose of the school was to educate the oppressed and deprived girls. In 1912 Most Rev. Bishop Fredrick Linnborn, C.S.C. invited the RNDM Sisters to take responsibilities of the girls from St. Gregory's English Medium Co-education School. The Sisters named it St. Francis Xavier's Girls' English Medium School under the Patronization of the Archdiocese of Dhaka. In 1954 the English Medium School was affiliated by the Cambridge University, England (GCE). Side by side the Bengali Medium was run privately up to class X and the students appeared for Matriculation privately until 1980. After the Independence of Bangladesh by the Order of the Government in 1972 all the schools in Bangladesh were converted to Bangla Medium. The Government then granted permission to the RNDM Sisters to run St. Francis Xavier's as English Medium School. Thus the extension of St. Francis Xavier's English Medium from Luxmibazar was moved at Mohammadpur and it was named as St. Francis Xavier's Green Herald International School. St. Francis Xavier's Girls' Bengali Medium at Luxmibazar got its registration in 1979 by the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Dhaka. The College Section got Permission in May 2017 and class began in July 2017. The course of studies meet the requirements of the secondary and higher secondary certificate examination conducted by the BISE, Dhaka. The Students are offered a choice of three groups - Science, Humanities and Business Studies.
