After the separation of East Bengal from India in 1947 the people of Rajshahi region were deprived of medical education and healthcare facilities. In 1949 some renowned persons of civil society and political persons involved in administration took initiative to establish a private medical school in Rajshahi city. Initially they launched LMF (Licentiate of Medical Faculty) diploma course under State Medical Faculty Dhaka. Eighty students were admitted in the first batch. In 1954, erstwhile Pakistan government converted it to government medical college. In 1958, it was launched as a complete college.
Over view
Rajshahi Medical College Hospital is the only tertiary level hospital in this area, situated in the heart of Rajshahi city. The hospital receives a large number of patients from areas including whole Rajshahi division and the northern part of Khulna Division. This institute started its journey in 1958 with only 550 beds but now is able to accommodate around 1700 patients on a daily basis. Although the manpower specially the 3rd class & 4th class employees remain the same (manpower for 550 beds), the hospital relentlessly tries to overcome this limitation and provide desired services to the people. Several new departments and wards have been established in recent years bringing along new instruments and modern treatment ideas to the facility. ICU, CCU, HDU, Nephrology with dialysis facilities, Neurology, Oncology, Cardiology, Neonatology etc. are the specialized departments which are providing satisfactory services to the patients. Among machinery equipment MRI, CT scan, Angiogram etc. are fully functioning. Recently this hospital received a Bracky-therapy machine and started its operation successfully.

The city is blessed by the mazar of Sufi Saint Hazrat Shah Mukhdam. Rajshahi is famous for silk, mango and these are the main attractions of city not only for people at home but also abroad. It is well-known all over the country that Rajshahi is the city of education and as its part Rajshahi Medical College and the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital was established in 1958. Since then this hospital has been serving the people of the whole northern part of Bangladesh.

Henceforth, Sadar hospital was converted to dental unit. At present MBBS, BDS and postgraduate course on different subjects are running in this college. BDS course was launched in 1992 and postgraduate course in 1998. General Medical Council of Great Britain recognised this medical college on 1 July 1992. Many doctors and students of this college participated in independence war of Bangladesh in 1971. A Shahid Minar was built in front of administrative building in 1974.[1]

Rajshahi Medical College(Bengali: রাজশাহী মেডিকেল কলেজ) is a government medical school in Bangladesh, established in 1958. It is located in Rajshahi. It is affiliated with Rajshahi University.
It was the second such institution in erstwhile East Pakistan after Dhaka Medical College. It has a large hospital that is the central provider for advanced health care in the northern part of Bangladesh.
Rajshahi Medical College admits 200 students every year for its M.B.B.S. program. Its dental unit admits a further 50 students. Students are admitted in these programs after high school and get a degree after 5 years of study and 1-year internship in the government-owned public hospital.
