Govt. Barisal College is one of the most renowned colleges in the division of Barisal. It is a college of glory and tradition as it was established at the residence of Mahatma Ashwani Kumar Datta. It bears the testimony of the glorious Tamal Tree and demonstration of the golden touch of Ashwani Kumar. Regarding its significance and heritage it was nationalised in 1986. Prior to that it had an excellent academic reputation. It continued its earlier reputation by keeping academic convention. At present Govt. Barisal College is the pride of the division for its having a glorious result in the H.S.C, BA (Pass) B.B.S, and BA (Hons) examinations. Along with the academic facilities Barisal College is furnishing the students with an opportunity of exercising co- curricular and extra curricular activities. Recently Govt. Barisal College team has clinched the championship of the national level Clearman Confidence cup Inter College Tournament 2010 organized by Uniliver Bangladesh Ltd. As Barisal College is situated at the heart of the Barisal City, students are encounaged to get themselves admitted into this college. As a consequence, Govt. Barisal College has to accommodate a lot of students. Besides, there are BNCC and Rover scouts units in Barisal College which run many social and rehabilitating programmes. In fact, Govt. Barisal College is an ideal college which is committed to ensure quality education and impart contribution to the development of the country.

Govt. Barisal College is one of the famous college in Barisal city for cultural activities. It is located on the home of Ashwini Kumar Dutta, who is the father of modern Barisal.
