The hospital was established in 1972, immediately following independence. It was funded by the late Professor Tofayel Ahmed, the Bangladesh Government, Save the Children Fund of the UK and World Vision of Bangladesh.

The hospital is administered by a management board appointed by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The Ministry provides 50% of total annual funding, and the remainder is funded by payment for services, individual donations and grants. The Dhaka Shishu Hospital Trust, created by two public lotteries as well as donations, provides additional financial support when necessary.

Everybody knows what a government Hospital could offer . In fact, this Hospital is not an exceptional one. But i have a different opinion about this one. I had to stay at this hospital for my niece. He got proper treatment as well as got full recovery under the supervision of duty doctor. People from lower income family must visit this place because this is very cheap, trustworthy and one of the best children hospital in Dhaka. Sometimes outside syndicate could harm anyone who does not know the trend here. Please be aware of outsider. do not take any offer from unknown person.

Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital is the largest children hospital in Bangladesh. It is a Government supported tertiary level public hospital for children 650 beds .

A few months after the liberation of Bangladesh, in March 1972, Dhaka Shishu (Children) hospital, the only children hospital in the country was established. With the help of a few voluntary organizations and the Government of Bangladesh, it first started its services in a private house at Dhanmondi, Dhaka with 50 indoor beds. The out patient department (OPD) of the hospital started in a tent in the nearby area of Sukrabad, Dhaka at the same time. Consistent financial support was received initially from the “Save the Children Fund. UK” and later on from the “World Vision, Bangladesh”.

December 1974 National Economic Council (NEC) of Bangladesh chaired by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, approved a scheme to construct a 250-bed children hospital expandable to 500 beds. Subsequently, in March 1975, with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Bangladesh, the site of the project was transferred to the present location at Sher-e-Barigla Nagar, Shyamoli, Dhaka.

Dhaka Shishu Hospital started functioning in this premise from June 1977. slide-11The construction costs were funded by the government-grants and DSH trust-fund which was gathered from donations, two public lotteries and concerts. A committee formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh supervised the construction project. Among others, Late Prof. Tofayel Ahmed, the Founder Member Secretary of the Management Board of Dhaka Shishu Hospital, was a member of the construction committee.

In 17th January 2012 Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of a new 9-storied building of the Hospital. At the same time she also inaugurated the Paediatric Cardiac Center with Cardiac Surgery, Cath-Lab, & Cardiac ICU facilities which is the first office kind for children in the country.

It's a specialized hospital with every kind of treatment facilities available for children. I sent a patient, a small child with critical condition and the doctors did their best to save him, although at the end that child didn't survive I was quite impressed with their service and sincerity.

Treatment of the Dhaka Shishu Hospital is the best in Bangladesh for the Children's. Previous time I thought that it's a Government own hospital but after that I knew that it's a private hospital. I went this hospital several times with my daughter. Emergency of the hospital is open for 24 hours and treatments are also very helpful for the poor people.
