Bhola govt. College, The lighthouse of education in Bhola, has been illuminating since its establishment in 1962. This instiution has been playing the most significant role in providing opportunites for higher education among the students coming from island, rural and semi-rural background at an affordable means. Now it offers Bachelor Degree,Honours Degree and Masters Degree. It also runs HSC program. Several thousand students study here.

The background of this college is eventful. Bhola, the largest island of Bangladesh, is bounded by the rivers of lower Meghna and Shahbajpur Channel to The to east and by The Tetulia and Kalbadar to the west .It was a detached and remote island and it had no road connechtion with the mainland of the country. There was no institution for higher education in Bhola and so students had to go a long distance by Gahona boat little ferry boat known as launch . But it was too much risky and life threatening during the rainy and stormy seasons. These distressed and affecting scenarios awakened some patrons of learning and they took an enterprise to establish a college in Bhola. In 1957-58 they tried but it was an unsuccessful attempt, In 1961,Ak Dutt Chowdhury the then DC of Barisal,in a meeting with the local elite of Bhola decided to establish the college and Altajer Rahman, alocal businessman and Abdul Gafur of Charfession donated for the college.
