Part-01: The first satellite earth station at Betbunia under Kawkhali upazila of the district, inaugurated by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on June 14 of 1975. International Telecommunication Facilities: Bangladesh commissioned its first Standard A Satellite Earth Station at Betbunia to work with INTELSAT system. The international telecommunication facilities became easier and versatile after installation of the Standard B Satellite Station at Talibabad. The third Satellite Earth Station along with an International Trunk Exchange (ITX) was commissioned in 1994 at Mohakhali in Dhaka. For Telecom lover its highly recommended to visit (need prior permission from Telejogajog Bhaban, 37/E Eskatan Garden Rd, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh). It's located besides the main road between Chittangog and Rangamati hence, to reach there you can take the Bus to Rangamati from anywhere (Dhaka or from Chittangog).
Part-02: The Bangabandhu-1 (BD-1), will be the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite operated by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) which is scheduled to launch in 2017 (it's glad to share that, the ground station will be in the Betbunia). It is expected to be located at 119° East longitude geostationary slot. It will be built by Thales Alenia Space. Bangladesh has planned to launch a Communication & Broadcasting Satellite consisting 24 Ku and 16 C-band transponders. The priority satellite applications are Direct to Home (DTH), VSAT, Backhaul and Trunking, Network Restoration, Disaster Preparedness and relief etc. The Primary Service Area (PSA) would be Bangladesh and neighboring countries and the Secondary Service Area (SSA) would be South East Asia, Europe, MENA, and East Africa depending on orbital slot.
