It was firstly founded in 1921 as a British institution for textile education and it was under University of Dhaka as a affiliate college but in 2010 it become as a public university. It located in Tejgaon Industrial area , beside Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed ave, Dhaka. Its the only dream place for the students who wants the textile educations. It offers Bsc and Msc also PhD for the students and also offers research. It has 9 department like as Yarn, Fabrics,Chemical, appeal, fashion design Engineering.

Admission to BUTEX is highly competitive and needs a high academic attainment at the S.S.C. and H.S.C. level. Selection of the students for admission is made through an admission test of 200 marks and considering GPA of S.S.C. and H.S.C. or equivalent examinations (details in admission notice). Students get chance to take admission according to merit.

The requirements for admission test are:

Students must be Bangladeshi by birth or legal immigration.
S.S.C. or equivalent examination Passed from Science group and must obtaining 4.50 (without 4th subject) from any Board of Secondary & Higher Secondary Education Board.
H.S.C. or equivalent examination Passed from Science group of current academic year and must obtaining 4.50 (without 4th subject) and at least total GP 19.00 but individually not below grade point 4.00 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Only Textile University in Bangladesh both in public and private label. Quality of education improving Students coming out of this University are hugely involved in textiles and garment sectors.
M.Sc ,MBA and PhD is available.
To get admitted you have to come through with the admission test and lots of participants every year to get admitted.
Foreign students also come here to study.
There are few scholarship available for abroad students.
