Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of agriculture, that conducts research on all crops except rice, jute, sugarcane, and tea for which there are separate institutes. The central research station of the institute is at Joydebpur, Gazipur. The institute has established six regional research stations in six regions of Bangladesh to develop new technologies. These research stations are located at Ishurdi, Jamalpur, Jessore, Hathazari, Rahmatpur, and Akbarpur.

বাংলাদেশ কৃষি গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউটের ইতিহাস শতাধিক বছরের। ১৮৮০ সালের ফেমিন কমিশন রিপোর্টের ভিত্তিতে একটি ছোট্ট শাখা হিসেবে ‘বেঙ্গল ল্যান্ড রেকর্ডস ডিপার্টমেন্টের’ এর অধীনে এর যাত্রা শুরু হয়। বস্তুতপক্ষে উপমহাদেশের এই অঞ্চলে (বর্তমান বাংলাদেশ) সরকারি পর্যায়ে কৃষি কর্মকান্ডের সূত্রপাত এখান থেকেই। এভাবে কৃষি বিভাগের সূচনা হলেও এতে গবেষণার সুযোগ তেমন ছিল না বলা যায়। গবেষনার সুযোগ সৃষ্টির লক্ষ্যে ভারতের তৎকালীন ভাইসরয় লর্ড কার্জন কৃষি বিভাগকে ল্যান্ড রের্কড ডিপার্টমেন্টের আওতামুক্ত করে একে আলাদা মর্যাদায় অভিষিক্ত করেন এবং গবেষণার সুযোগ সৃষ্টির জন্য ‘নিউক্লিয়ার এগ্রিকালচারেল রিসার্চ ল্যাবরেটরি’ নামে ঢাকার তেজগাঁওয়ে একটি গবেষণাগার প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। এখান থেকেই প্রকৃত পক্ষে তৎকালীন বাংলায় কৃষিতে গবেষণা কার্যক্রমের সূচনা। এরপর ১৯০৮ সালে ১৬১.২০ হেক্টর জমির উপর ঢাকা ফার্ম প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। ঢাকা ফার্মের প্রতিষ্ঠা ছিল কৃষি ক্ষেত্রে একটি উল্লেখযোগ্য। কিন্তু ১৯৬২ সালে তৎকালীন সরকার কর্তৃক ২য় রাজধানী প্রতিষ্ঠার জন্য ঢাকা ফার্মের (বর্তমান শেরে বাংলা নগর) জমি অধিগ্রহ করা হলে কৃষি গবেষণার ভবিষ্যৎ অনিশ্চিত হয়ে পড়ে। যাহোক ১৯৬৬ সালে ঢাকা থেকে ৩৫ কিলোমিটার উত্তরে জয়দেবপুরে ২৬০ হেক্টর জমিতে ঢাকা ফার্ম স্থানান্তরিত হয়।
