It is one of the few international universities (and the only one female university) of Bangladesh. Multiple diversity can be felt in the campus.

AUW began operations in Chittagong in March 2008. Its first cohort of students consisted of 130 young women from six countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
In May 2013, graduated its first class of 132 students.
In 2016, enrollment hits a new high of 605 students from 15 countries, and bringing AUW’s alumnae population to more than 440.
In 2017, Professor Nirmala Rao joins AUW as Vice-Chancellor.

Currently, the university offers 5 undergraduate majors:
Economics (B.A.), Politics, Philosophy & Economics (B.A.), Bioinformatics (B.S), Environmental Sciences (B.S.), Public Health Studies (B.S.).
And, 11 undergraduate minors:
Asian Studies, Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Development Studies, Economics, Environmental Sciences, Finance, Gender Studies, Mathematics, Psychology, Public Health Studies.

AUW students are involved in residence life, extra-curricular activities, and athletics. These are controlled by: Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Student Activities, Career Development Center, Health and Wellness Center, and On-Campus Employment.

AUW hosts several events each year. Like most recently it had hosted Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, Film fest, Photo carnival, Maths and ICT fest, Halloween party, National Conference on Natural Sciences and Technology.
