Building a hospital in Bangladesh while meeting International Joint Commission requirements presents many complex challenges. SmithGroupJJR used its experience with a prior Bangladeshi hospital, uncovering synergies among the constraints. But, while the two hospitals are similar in size, Chittagong will be built on a site that is nearly 70 percent smaller.
Cultural context and space standards were the greatest challenges for this 348-bed hospital. The design required sensitivity to the climate as well as the expectations of Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and majority Muslim communities, in public and patient spaces big enough to accommodate large numbers of patients often accompanied by family members. From the segregated entrances to controlled internal circulation, the project team achieved a remarkable clarity despite the constraints—providing clear wayfinding and achieving spatial performance comparable to U.S. standards at about half the square footage per bed.response / report this review -
