Gazi Husrev Bey’s Madresa is the oldest educational institution of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was founded in 1537 as a vakuf (endowment) by the Ottoman Governor, Gazi Husrev Bey.
The building is a national monument of BiH and is located across from the main entrance to Gazi Husrev Bey’s Mosque. The dershana (lecture hall) takes up the central area and the rooms off to the side once served as dormitories for the students.
Gazi Husrev Bey had the medresa built as a monument to his mother, Seldžuk Sultanija, the daughter of Sultan Bayazid II, so this facility was also known as “Seldžuklija”.
Given the fact that the roof was made of lead, the same material used in making bullets (kuršumi), people later referred to the medresa as Kurshumli - Kuršumli Medresa or Kuršumlija.
It was decided in 1921 that the Khaniqah, which is located right next door and served as an educational institution for dervishes, and Kuršumli Madresa would be combined to form one institution – Gazi Husrev Bey’s Madresa.
Starting in 1940, classes were held at the nearby Đulagin Dvor building. Kuršumli Madresa is now home to Gazi Husrev Bey’s Museum, in honor of the great figure who contributed immeasurably to the development of Sarajevo.response / report this review -
