From how he conducts business, hires up-and-coming youth, and the skill with which he fixes automatic transmission, it really is no surprise that Jerko cannot find himself time without work to be done. Known around Bosnia for being the so called 'master at automatic vehicles' -- which is no joke; he was recommended to us by neighbors in Zenica, auto repair in Zenica, Vitez, and even Tuzla, and by our family in Imotski -- this man is the mechanic that your transmission needs.
My experience with Auto Jera is almost nothing except exceptional, and I'd like to briefly talk about it so that you -- dear reader -- can best gauge who you are entrusting with your vehicle.
I have had issues with my reverse gear for about a month. Anytime I throw it in reverse, it takes a good 10 seconds to 'catch', and 90% of the time the engine simply revs, and the car moves as though it's in neutral. Knowing that this is not only an inconvenience, but a safety concern, my 14 year old Passat was in desperate need of a fixing. As stated above, the only person that anyone, and I mean ANYONE would recommend is Jerko. I tried calling Jerko, however, he told me he's busy with other cars for the next few days, and then after that's done, he'd have to go to Germany (!) to fix a transmission. I wasn't able to get an appointment for about 10 days.
Before I continue, I'd like to make an aside to explain what stood out about his work in Germany in retrospect. After talking to him in person about the trip, he mentioned that he didn't take a plane to Germany; he drove. Yes, that's right. He drove 14 hours to see a client. Why? Because this man doesn't just work with cars -- he _loves_ cars.
I was finally able to get an appointment, and left the house by 5AM to get there in the morning. He had promised that it wouldn't take more than a day (that is, if we got there first thing in the morning), so I arrived at around 8AM.
Never having met him, nor having him seen my face, seeing him for the first time was definitely interesting. He was already working on a transmission, putting in a clutch or something, before most people wake up. We shook hands and he told me the deal: "I will look at the transmission without taking it apart, and if I will call you in an hour or so to tell you if we have to take it apart." He asked if I was hungry (which I was), and then drove me to town and recommended a few good restaurants, which was a very classy move. I ate some breakfast, and then he called. Bad news.
Turns out that my B-Clutch got wrecked. Stripped and torn in half. He gave me a ride back to his shop and actually showed me, in person, what had happened. It was very transparent of him to do so, which is one of my biggest disdains of auto mechanics: the lack of transparency. He offered guidance in what my next step should be, and I decided to replace it with a used clutch, since all the other clutches are going to give soon since they are 14 years old. His sister then offered me a ride back into town so that I can meet with family to kill time while he and his workers install it.
It took about 4 hours for him to fix the transmission. I test drove it a bit, reversed up hills and such, and saw that my car works once again.
Now for the payment. I did get quotes from other Automatic Transmission Experts in Bosnia, one in Doboj, one in Zenica, and one in Tuzla, and they all gave me the fee of a thousand marks, or 500 Euros. However, Jerko's replacement of the clutch is 300 Euros, and his price for a transmission oil change is 50 Euros. So not only had he fixed my transmission in a day, but he had done it at two thirds of the cost.
At the time of the service he provided me, he still worked where he lived. He'd live upstairs, and he'd work downstairs. However, he has since purchased a proper, larger, more equiped lot to work in, and is in the process of moving his business.
