The Armenian Cemetery of Jugha used to serve the Armenian city of Jugha (Julfa) in Nakhichevan. In 1604 Shah Abbas I of Persia ordered the deportation of the 300,000 Armenians of the Ararat Plain. Jugha a city of 40,000 Armenians was among the towns to be deported. The surviving townspeople built New Julfa in Isfahan, Iran. The cemetery was home to 10,000 Armenian khachkars (cross stones used as gravestones). By 1903 only 5,000 remained. In 1988 the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan began and the remaining 1,858 Armenians were deported from Nakhichevan. The Azerbaijani regime has been destroying these khachkars ever since. By 1999 only 2,700 remained and in 2002 only 2,000. In 2005 Iranian citizens from their side of the border recorded and took pictures of Azerbaijani soldiers in uniform destroying the khachkars of the cemetery with sledgehammers, loaded the broken stones onto trucks, and dumped them into the waters of the Araxes. The Azerbaijani government later built a military training camp on this site.
