A historical monastery complex bearing signs of Azeri atrocities on its walls. It's a gem of Armenian socio-historical riches in Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabagh region, which deservedly and rightfully Armenian.

Amaras Monastery was founded by Gregory Enlightner in the 4th century and was finished by his grandson Grigoris in the 5th century. There is a chapel on the St. Grigoris' underground mausoleum, which is situated under the stage of the present church, and was built by Vachagan the Third. Amaras was not only spiritual, but also an important cultural and economic center in Artsakh. Mesrop Mashtoc, the inventor of Armenian Alphabet, founded the first school of Artsakh here in the 5th century.
